Description S 2019-10-19 00:00:01 UTC
Hi there, looks like a kcm_nightcolor component needs to be added to Bugzilla.

Would it be possible to add an option to automatically reduce the brightness to a specific level when Night Color mode is activated?

Thanks!
Comment 1 Pawel 2019-10-19 07:08:58 UTC
It will be nice...
Comment 2 klarnorbert 2019-11-01 11:11:15 UTC
Would be cool! I'd use native night mode, but the Redshift plugin has more options.

This would be really nice.

I updated KDE one day and noticed that it added built-in Night Color. I promptly enabled it and uninstalled redshift. I soon noticed that I had the brightness dimmed in redshift but in KDE there wasn't an option for that.

I am on a desktop with dual external monitors. I can't change the brightness on the monitors themselves because they don't let me change the brightness in SRGB mode. I also don't want to turn off SRGB because the monitors are slightly different models and the color would be weird.

I tried setting the brightness using xrandr but that undid the effect of Night Mode.

I would greatly appreciate it if KDE Night Mode could change both the color and the brightness

I'm all for this! The way redshift does it is by simply decreasing the gamma, which allows for a lower effective brightness than just turning the actual brightness all the way down.

Maybe it could be implemented this way too? It seems easier and, like I said, has the advantage of being able to dim the screen further than with the normal brightness (or maybe add both a brightness and a gamma slider?)

workaround so far:

* deactivate night color.
* run the following

$ redshift -v -b 1:.75 -l LAT:LON

The feature would be great!

An addition to the following would be great:
When working in the setup with the closed laptop's lid and monitor, one could use the try widget/icon for battery (To show Energy information), to increase/decrease the brightness for the currently "active" monitor.
Or when the laptop lid is open, for all monitors, or some option to choose.

TYPO FIXES:
- use the tray widget/icon by scrolling the mouse-wheel - now it works only for my laptop screen, but not for the connected monitor

Also, some laptops does not have low enough brigthness level. It would be cool to also add gray filter on screen to further reduce eye strain (pretty much exactly what blue light filter does, only with gray tones).

I am 100% for this feature request.

Many studies have shown that not only the screen color temperature can affect sleep, but the screen brightness as well. In fact, some studies, such as this one: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6751071/ found that screen brightness had a greater effect on sleep than even the color temperature

Additionally, there could be an option to allow the user to choose between manipulating the gamma levels and the backlight levels. Both should be rather easy to implement since KCM should have access to these options already from its brightness applet and display modules

Just came across this while going to make a feature request for it. Brightness (even via gamma) would be really great for Night Color. One of the biggest things I am missing since switching to Wayland full time as Redshift doesn't work on Wayland. Anyone know of any other work arounds ?

Yes indeed! I accidentally opened a duplicate issue. Now with KDE 6, things are moving that much more to Wayland. My external displays at 0% brightness are still WAY too bright for real nighttime (with dim room lighting). I want a gamma-based (or whatever appropriate) way to reduce brightness like Redshift has — and this feature to adjust that gamma as part of the Night Light settings.

I don't know when it changed, but the brightness of external displays is now working perfectly! The system tray brightness/night-light tool has scroll-wheel motion to change brightness, and it's superb! This is happening in software, independent of the display hardware settings.

So, it's clearly much more trivial now to finish this request here. The very same control that now exists manually just needs to be added to the night-light settings. Just have an option to choose to automatically reduce the display brightness at the same time as the red-filter as part of the night-light settings!

Is there any work being done to make this possible? Would be a great feature and make additional programs unnecessary.

It was implemented in Plasma 6.2 I think.
You can scroll via mouse on the night color system tray icon and it should change the brightness of all connected screens.
Of course, you can also do it one by one by clicking the tray icon.

I was referring to the first entry above. As far as I know and can see on my system this hasn't yet been achieved. There is no option for automatically reducing brightness when Night Color mode is activated. You have to do it manually with the widget. It would be nice to have an option when configuring Night Color with a slider under the Color Temperature settings for setting brightness too. For example if I set 8pm as the trigger time for Night Color mode, my brightness starts to get lower while the Color Temperature decreases.

Input queue of feature requests is way over KDE dev community capacity so we must be patient. Even if you implement it yourself like I did for another issue. It takes weeks or months for a reviewer to check your code.
