Description Stefan Tittel 2006-04-17 16:10:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc 3.4.5
OS: Linux

KMail doesn't check if it is minimized when automatically marking e-mails as read. This is especially annoying when using the system tray to display unread messages.

Example:

1) Activate the system tray icon and set KMail to check for mails every x minutes,
2) send yourself an e-mail,
3) go to the folder the e-mail sent in 2) will appear in, so the new mail will automatically get selected when it arrives,
4) minimize KMail,
5) wait x minutes for KMail to automatically fetch the mail.

Result: The new e-mail does not show up as unread message (or only shows up unread for a few seconds, if you set "Marked messages as read" to something > 0) in the system tray, because it got automatically marked read even though you haven't actually read it, because KMail was minimized.

I confirm this behaviour. If the inbox is empty and kmail receives a new e-mail message, kmail will still open the new e-mail message and mark it as read, even if kmail's window is out of focus or kmail is minimized to the tray.

The issue is a bit different on my IMAP account:

1. Setup a rule for "From" contains "@mydomain...." with action "move to mymail/private"
2. Send yourself a mail
3. After synchronization, mail is fetched and moved as unread to mymail/private;
4. don't go to the folder just start another synchronization
5. This will mark the unread mail in all subfolders as read.

This behaviour is annoying since I synchronize automatically quite often and it's hard to find incoming mails again which are marked as read.

Behaviour of my Kmail installation:
After making a filter whith action "Move to folder" when incoming message fits to rule and is moved to dest folder, it is automatically marked as read. If I have dest folder open in Kmail i can see that email is marked as new only for half a second and then his state changes automatically to read. Even if there is added an action: Mark message as new after action Move message, email does not remain new in destination folder.
