Description Jason Straight 2022-06-13 23:37:02 UTC
After updating kde frameworks today, window thumbnails no longer work on task manager. The tooltips show up with an icon for the application, rather than the window thumbnails.

After updating to Plasma 5.25 and KDE Frameworks 5.95 on Arch Linux, I am facing the same issue on X11. Wayland works.

Fixed with https://invent.kde.org/frameworks/plasma-framework/-/commit/dff1b034c1162062aa2292099d3d01fc53dafdf6 in Frameworks 5.96, but good distros should be backporting it to 5.95 as we emailed them specifically requesting this.

This only affected X11, which most developers aren't using and testing anymore, so I guess that's why it was missed prior to the release. If folks want to keep the Plasma X11from deteriorating too badly before it's killed off altogether (which may happen in Plasma 6), we'll probably need more beta testers and adventurous users to run X11 KDE software from git master. Neon Unstable is good for this.

Thank you Nate. I build plasma-framework with the patch and it works. I will open a bug on downstream.
Plasma is a very good shape on Wayland. But I am waiting for Bug 446375, it is annoying.

About testing,
Is there a places where new changes are documented?
Volunteers could follow the list and test directly the changes.

Galder

The list would be ridiculously massive. :) Mostly you just need to know what's going on by watching everything. That's what I do at least.

Getting gitlab notifications about new merge requests is a good way to keep on top of things, as it gives you an opportunity to test them out and be a QA person

Im talking about main applications like plasma-desktop, Frameworks, dolphin
etc. I should not need to be long if each developer adds a resume of new
features and fixes. Could also include the pull request.

For Fedora users the fix is now in Zawertuns copr, see https://github.com/ZaWertun/fedora-copr-kde5/issues/115

Probably a bit off-topic, but as long as Wayland isn't production ready stable (and I consider kwin dying meaning all your applications are force-closed and data thus lost not being production ready stable) it would be nice if at least some tests were done on X11, since a good amount of our userbase is probably still using it for one reason or another.
Comment 11 Nate Graham 2022-06-15 22:29:48 UTC
I agree. Of course someone needs to write write those tests or perform them manually. :)

Effort doesn't appear out of thin air; people work on stuff that they either feel passionate about or are paid to work on. At this point, most of the passion and money that I see are in the direction of Wayland, rightly or wrongly. So if folks want to see more and better maintenance of the X11 session, it will require a similar injection of passion or money.

The fact that KWin dying takes your apps is indeed quite unpleasant and makes it not prodution-ready, but you may be happy to hear that it's been an active area of work for over two years. The extended timeframe on this is because it turns out to be extraordinarily difficult to do--as perhaps evidenced by the fact that we never got this for the X11 display server. To this day it still takes all of your apps with it when it crashes or gets killed. Of course you may say that KWin is more likely to crash than Xorg is, and today that's probably true. But I hear horror stories from long-time FOSS users that the X server wasn't always a rock of stability either. :) Things get better over time.

Hi Nate, my issue is slightly different. Everything works perfectly fine except, it's live video (youtube, udemy etc...) thumbnails aren't stable. It only works half the time. It randomly stops working.

Is this known bug in 5.25?
Comment 15 Nate Graham 2022-06-22 15:42:30 UTC
That's a different bug, then. Bug 455730 is definitely a duplicate of this one.

Thank you for your quick reply. BTW, I forgot to mention that one of kwin effect called "Thumbnail Aside" got affected by this too. Unfortunately, this feature happens to be one of my favorite to use when I'm doing screen recording or to watch youtube in a small thumbnail aside other tasks. I'm not 100% sure if these two are related to each other but it started around the same time. FYI, I set the "keep window thumbnails" setting to "Always" so it's been working great whether window is minimized or unminized up until last kde version (5.24). I really hope these features will be fixed and come back soon. That said, I've been really impressed by 5.25.1 other than these issues so far. Thank you so much for all the hard works and this awesome project as always! :)
