SUMMARY
Window previews stopped working after updating to Plasma 5.25.  The icon is generated as if the compositor were off but the previews in the alt-tab box do work. 
I've tried with a clean config on a new user but the issue persists

OBSERVED RESULT
Window previews do not work

EXPECTED RESULT
Window previews do work

Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.25.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.95.0
Qt Version: 5.15.4
Kernel Version: 5.18.3-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz
Memory: 7,6 GiB of RAM

Forgot to mention: this is for the hover over the icon effect.

So the steps to reproduce are:
1. Open 2 or more windows
2. Hover over the app icon with the mouse
