Description missive 2009-07-15 01:56:28 UTC
Version:           unknown (using 4.3.60 (KDE 4.3.60 (KDE 4.4 >= 20090706)), compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.28-13-generic

With the Task Manager set to "Sorting: Manual" tasks that have been arranged manually work properly as long as I stay on the same desktop.

Once I switch to another desktop, then switch back, the taskbar entries have moved back to where they were before I arranged them manually.

I also have grouping set to "Do not group" if that makes any difference.

Comment 2 ietc 2009-07-16 02:36:38 UTC
Confirming here from my duplicate bug:

Sometimes I notice that my entries have been rearranged even without
my switching virtual desktops.

I cannot really tell what the widget is trying to sort the tasks by. It does
not appear to be the order in which they were opened and it certainly is not
being done alphabetically by program name.

KDE 4.2.96 (KDE 4.3 RC2) "release 142"
OpenSUSE 11.1
Comment 3 Vlad Lungeanu 2009-07-17 08:54:26 UTC
I confirm the bug on Kubuntu 9.04, with KDE 4.3 RC2.

My configuration for the Task Manager plasma widget is as follows:
- Grouping: Do Not Group
- Sorting: Manually
- Only show tasks from the current desktop

Compositing is disabled.
Comment 4 Oscar Fuentes 2009-08-05 17:46:02 UTC
Confirmed on Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.3 final, same configuration as comment #3.

I can also confirm that this feature worked just perfectly in KDE 4.2. This is very useful feature. Please fix it ASAP. Now task manager reorders applications in very unpredictable way after virtual desktop switch. It makes me nervous that applications are messed up every time.
Comment 14 Yoann Laissus 2009-09-01 16:58:41 UTC
This bug is still present in kde 4.3.1 with ubuntu jaunty (kubuntu-ppa packages).
It makes me nervous a lot too...

For the record, I believe this bug also applies to "Do Not Sort" (at least in 4.3.0), as well as sorting "Manually". I use "Do Not Sort", and frequently I find that the task manager forgets the order of items when I switch desktops. Very annoying to have to relearn where your apps live on the taskbar.
Comment 17 Yoann Laissus 2009-09-06 13:20:53 UTC
The bug 202562 is probably duplicated of this one.

It is really an annoying one.

I can confirm this BUG on Fedora 11 KDE 4.3.1 . Its driving me crazy as I cant use workspaces anymore. I have around 25 to 30 windows open with no grouping in the taskbar. Switching workspaces, reloading the WindowManager or doing anything that causes the window list to get reloaded makes the taskbar shuffle all the windows. This pretty much stops me from using workspaces. Shuffling stuff randomly really sucks for usability.

I've already added my 20 votes. I can't believe this bug doesn't have a target date. OK, I realize that things aren't crashing and we can work around the problem. However, I also think that the comments here show how many of us use KDE in a structured, regimented, heavy work-load setting.
Comment 27 Beat Wolf 2009-10-29 16:25:32 UTC
the main problem is probably that the taskbar code is quite big and complicated, has many other bugs and the people that know the code have currently other projects in plasma. But "soon" feature freeze for kde 4.4 will be here, so there is a chance that bug gets fixed during that time
Comment 28 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-10-29 16:57:35 UTC
@Robert: "I can't believe this bug doesn't have a target date."

when i compare the # of items on our TODO lists and the # of people we have working on them, i can certainly believe it. also realize that (with some odd exceptions) we don't advertise "target dates" on any of the reports here.

you do have a unique opportunity here, however: unlike some other software, this is f/oss and you can write a patch to fix it now instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you. the code is in kdebase/workspace/libs/taskmanager/

I confirm that bug on my Mandriva 2010.0 64bits (KDE 4.3.2) and on Kubuntu 9.10 (KDE 4.3.2).

No problem with that for me. (KDE 4.4.3 from the kubuntu-updates ppa)
Comment 37 Bartosz Kwitniewski 2010-05-26 20:20:28 UTC
Works for me (tm). KDE 4.4.3, Arch Linux (64bit).

Show tooltips: off
Force row settings: off
Highlight windows: off
Maximum rows: 2
Grouping: manually
Sorting: maually
Only show tasks from the current desktop: on
Only show tasks from the current screen: off
Only show tasks that are minimized: off

Yes, I had, but I found a workaround by Bartosz Kwitniewski's comment (#37).

Turn off "Only show tasks from the current screen". (It worked in 4.4.2)
Comment 39 brenddie 2010-06-01 03:21:54 UTC
I didnt want to turn off "Only show tasks from the current screen" expecting it would show all windows from all workspaces on the taskbar, something I didnt want. I tried turning it off and it does stops the shuffling BUG but it doesnt show all windows on the taskbar. Is this expected behavior or did I just got lucky?
Comment 40 Arpad Ilia 2010-08-03 12:19:33 UTC
On Kubuntu 10.4, using KDE 4.4.5.
I still seem to have the problem. I tried the setup in #37 to no effect. Whenever I switch desktop then switch back the taskbar seem to reset itself (thus undoing both manual grouping and manual ordering).

By the way I had it in KDE 4.4.2 as well.
Comment 41 Roland Pallai 2011-04-03 16:19:43 UTC
I think this problem reappeared in 4.6.1 (4.5.5 was OK) and there isn't workaround at this time. I'm using KDE (and Compiz instead of kwin) from the Fedora 14 repo.

Is it works for somebody?
Comment 42 Bartosz Kwitniewski 2011-04-03 16:37:24 UTC
It works OK for me when changing desktop/activities on Arch Linux 64 bit (KDE 4.6.1). I use kwin.

Taskbar settings:
Force row settings: no
Show tooltips: no
Highlight windows: no
Maximum rows: 2
Groupping: manually
Sorting: manually
Only show tasks from the current screen: no
Only show tasks from the current desktop: yes
Only show tasks from the current activity: yes
Only show tasks that are minimized: no
Comment 43 Roland Pallai 2011-04-03 17:26:35 UTC
Thanks for your hint.

I spent more time on this issue and seems like the main problem is not the workspace switching but new/closed applications at this time.

Now also clear that the unexpected reordering happens only when there's 2 or more rows (I force row settings with value 2). Also works for me if I've only 1 row.

My taskbar settings:
Force row settings: yes
Show tooltips: yes
Highlight windows: yes
Maximum rows: 2
Groupping: manually
Sorting: manually
Only show tasks from the current screen: no
Only show tasks from the current desktop: yes
Only show tasks from the current activity: yes
Only show tasks that are minimized: no

Roland, it sounds like you're seeing behavior related to this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215231
Comment 45 Dion Moult 2011-11-23 13:55:08 UTC
Hmm? I am experiencing this in 4.7.3.

Alt-drag an app on the taskbar onto another app. Group is created. Ctrl-f2 to go to second desktop, then Ctrl-f1 to go back to first desktop (where I did the grouping), and they are ungrouped.

Tried various combinations of settings such as for the "show only on screen" fix to no avail.
