Description Krzysztof Sobolewski 2009-03-01 17:52:22 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

When I have a large(r) number of windows open and then switch desktop, the order of windows is scrambled in seemingly random fashion when I return to the original desktop. I expect them to stay the way I left them there.
I have a "tasks from current desktop" filter turned on (when it's turned off, there's no scrambling). Sorting is alphabetical, but AFAICT that does not matter for this effect to occur.

this bug report needs:

* a definition of what "larger number of windows" means. 5? 10? 50?

* all tasks widget settings as set in the configuration dialog

optional, but bonus points for:

* screenshots of problem in action

Actually it happens with any number of windows, it just not that visible when
there are a couple of them and you don't care what orer they are in.

I don't understant the second point, sorry.

And see attachments for the screenshots :)
I can assure you that the order of scrolling with mouse wheel, the most
annoying part for me, is scrambled in the same way.

> I don't understant the second point

what settings are you using for the task bar? you mentioned "only show on this desktop", what are the rest of the options set to?

and thanks for the screenshots, that helps.
Comment 6 Krzysztof Sobolewski 2009-03-06 19:08:11 UTC
Right. Here are the settings, although I'm pretty positive that the only one that matters is the one I mentioned:

Toolitips: off
Force row settings: on
Maximum # of rows: 2
[The two above I know for sure don't affect this effect in any way]

Grouping: by program name
Only if the task bar is full: on
Sorting: alphabetically
[I experimented with different sorting settings and given that I gave up with no result I can conclude that this doesn't affect it either]

Filters: "only show tasks from current desktop" is on, the rest is off.

HTH.
Comment 7 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-08-03 08:48:52 UTC
right, so this: "Filters: "only show tasks from current desktop" is on, the rest is off." will be the source of the problem (for future bug fixers)

Comment 9 Rémy Greinhofer 2010-01-02 15:15:59 UTC
I could reproduce the problem under KDE SC 4.3.4.
Comment 10 aditsu 2010-03-10 17:29:23 UTC
I confirm that I have a similar problem with KDE 4.3.5 in Gentoo.
My settings:
- tooltips: on
- row settings: off
- max rows: 2
- grouping: manually
- sorting: manually
- only current desktop: on
- only current screen: off
- only minimized: off

I'm glad to report that apparently this bug disappeared after I upgraded to 4.4 .2. My only remaining gripe in this regard is that the order still gets scrambled when I send the entire groups of windows to a different desktop - when I switch to this desktop, the windows in the groups are again in random order.
