Description Andreas Wallberg 2004-11-14 01:47:16 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.1)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

It would be very nice to have a search or filter field in Konqueror that works much like the Search field in Kmail; typing part of a filename would filter the list of files located in the present directory and make it easier to find a file or a group of files having a string in their names in common. The filtering could be a recursive search as well, looking for files in subdirectories, or even system-wide (perhaps controlled with a button). This feature would be a replacement/alternative/complement to the "Find file:" function already in Konq.

The concept is currently discussed over at KDE-apps.org at this page: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=17794&forummode=2&forumpage=0&forumexplevel=all and a concept screenshot is posted. The general interest seems to quite high in such a feature. Please visit the page and have a look, and join the discussion.

Please vote for this feature if you find it to be of interest!

Regards,
Andreas

heres a pic of this functionality in longhorn

http://www.infoweek.ch/Grafik/Archive/IW_2003_07/longhorn.jpg

we cant let them release this feature before us. when i used longhorn, i used it frequently and it was really helpful, especially when i was looking for files in the system32 directory that had hundreds of files and folders.
Comment 3 Davide Ferrari 2004-11-14 12:27:33 UTC
I don't think it should be taken as a "let's copy Longhorn", I think this is a great idea of its own, it should be implemented it to fit well with KDE 3.4 and, in the future, with KDE 4, but not forcing other designs into our.
Comment 4 Davide Ferrari 2004-11-14 13:03:53 UTC
Ah, it seems that is already implemented in K3B (at least 0.11.17) file view. So it should not be difficult :)
Comment 5 Maksim Orlovich 2004-11-15 18:43:12 UTC
Note to potential implementors: please disregard the vote count for this, as it is skewed by external linking.

The funny thing is: I have already implemented this feature and put it in the 3.4 feature plan without even knowing that this high voted entry exists :-)

I'll commit today.

ehm, I wonder, wouldn't this better be integrated with the google-search bar? So you don't need two bar's, but only one...

The google bar is HTML specific, whereby the dirfilter bar is file-view
specific.
It doesn't really matter into which C++ code the filter fields widget is
added.

I just had this idea today, when browsing a larggggggge directory to delete many file beginning by the same string... And As I use daily this function in AmaroK, that would be great to have it in konqueror too.
Well, when Mandrake switche to Kde 3.4, i'll be happy.

Oh, This would be great, that like in AmaroK the filtering be realtime, not when clicking a "go" button...

Hi all!
Only recently discovered this:
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=22720
And then this bug here.
I wanted sth. like this for ages! _Many_ thanks to whoever developed this!!
Great that it already exists.
Not so great that such a useful feature is extremely hard to discover though.
And just using "Configure toolbar" I am not able to put the filter
toolbar in the address bar like the kde-apps config hack does.
This should really be more discoverable. I'm tempted to say the hack
from kde-apps should even be the default. This is really not another "geek"
feature cluttering the desktop but very useful and easy to learn for everyone.
I really hope this will be in KDE 3.5 by default.

Where can I find this search bar in KDE 3.4?
Comment 17 Martin Koller 2005-08-21 22:13:36 UTC
konqueror in file view mode. Configure Toolbars -> Filter Toolbar <DirFilter>
