Description Ivan 2004-08-19 08:13:07 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

Updated from KDE 3.2 to 3.3 using apt4SUSE (9.0); qt were updated too.

When KDE is started the taskbar doesn't work: it list a button/application(??) with X icon that can't be maximized or closed, I just have the button on the taskbar but no window. New opened applications or applications launched from the previous session doesn't show up.
Removing and readding the taskbar fix the problem.

Same with system tray. System tray is empty at start up, removing and adding fix the problem.

I tried to play with the "session" options (empty session, manual, restore...) but no improvement.
Comment 1 Ivan 2004-08-19 08:50:52 UTC
this seems to be related to reading/writing configs.

After restarting X, I had the same problem again... this time in spite of removing/readding, I went to taskbar config, changed a random checkbox, chose Apply... everything works including the pager (bug # 87484).
Problem reappear if i close and restart X.

Comment 2 Ivan 2004-08-19 09:26:06 UTC
Actually changing config on the taskbar doesn't solve completely the problem for the taskbar and system tray but it seems to fix it for the pager (errata: bug # 87485).
't
I still have some strange behaviors:
- taskbar and system tray don't get updated, apparently in a random way
- apps continue to think system tray is in a position it is not anymore (eg. kopete baloons appearing in "wrong" corner of the screen)
- taskbar list a ghost Kcmdshell(??) app that can't be closed.

It seems that removing and readding doesn't present the above problems, but still at each X restart taskbar and system tray aren't working.

Have the same problem as described above with
kasbar.
Comment 4 Ivan 2004-08-21 14:46:40 UTC
problem persist after updating to the latest and greatest packages from SUSE 9.0 through apt including bug # 87485
Comment 5 Rob Sell 2004-08-21 16:15:14 UTC
it appears this only happens when you have an existing set of kde config files I just created a new user on my system, everything works fine. I will post more if i figure out how to fix it. Short of deleting my .kde dir

Add to the above, the pager applet doesn't work correctly until it's been removed and re-added.

The main functionality (click to change desktop) works, but it's not showing the outlines of windows open on each desktop. Remove and re-add returns this function.

Personally having the empty systray and taskbar problems, along with this pager glitch. Using SuSE 9.1 RPMs. Problems were first noticed in 3.3rc2. (I never tried any previous 3.3 releases or CVS.)
Comment 7 Rob Sell 2004-08-21 18:57:43 UTC
i removed my .kde dir and let it all get rebuilt when i relogged in, and it all works correctly now, the downside is that i lost all my settings but it works i guess that is what matters. ymmv

I've talked to a SUSE person a bit about this... Those using SUSE9.1 probably want to update kdebase3-suse. Others will probably have to blow away their ~/.kde/share/config/kickerrc
Comment 10 Leendert Meyer 2004-08-22 00:48:16 UTC
I can trigger the symptoms by adding a kdictionary-applet or a ksysguard-applet on a child panel or a main panel on my system, an up-to-date SuSE-9.1 system.
Comment 11 Ivan 2004-08-22 09:25:21 UTC
I moved ~/.kde/share/config/kickerrc somewhere else.
I can trigger the problem adding "application launcher" too. Restarting kicker as suggested in bug # 87612 doesn't solve the problem. The problem is still there at next reboot.

Same probleme for me. I have rm -rf ~/.kde but probleme is always here :/

I used the KDE 3.2.92 (Beta 2 "Kollege") SuSE RPMs with the Qt 3.3.2
SuSE RPMs until yesterday without problems.

The KDE 3.3 final RPMs have a Qt 3.3.3 dependancy, so I updated Qt
first. After updating Qt I started experiencing this bug (still with
KDE 3.2.92). Updating the KDE packages didn't help.

I had to downgrade to Qt 3.3.2 and rebuild the kdelibs3-RPMs by myself
(only these had the Qt 3.3.3 dependancies), but then the bug went
away. Rebuilding the Qt 3.3.3 RPMs by myself didn't help (but I did
only test rebuilding the official SRPMs, not compiling the original
Qt sources).

Perhaps this is a Qt bug or (once more) a SuSE patching/packaging bug.

Comment 14 Jeremy Erickson 2004-08-23 00:10:37 UTC
I had the same problems when upgrading to KDE 3.3 final using apt4rpm, which upgraded Qt to version 3.3.3 at the same time. After the upgrade the taskbar and system tray stopped working. Renaming my .kde directory (so that I had a backup but would have new settings) and restarting KDE fixed the problem, until I reconfigured the taskbar in a similar manner to my old configuration. Then the problem reappeared on the next restart of KDE. I did not have the problem with KDE 3.3RC2/Qt 3.3.2. I am on SuSE 9.1, and I have the latest kdebase3-SuSE to my knowledge (version 9.1-18.1). My panel with the problem has the KMenu, a Quick Launcher, a Dictionary applet, a bookmarks button, a window list button, a settings button, the system tray, a clock, a child panel with a Devices applet, and an external taskbar.
Comment 15 Ivan 2004-08-23 11:35:46 UTC
errata: even without using application launcher applet I still have problems with task bar.
Sometimes task bar forget to list apps.

I guess i have to add a followup again,I reported all was well in comment #7 above. After configuring the kicker again, the problem is back. I'm not sure if this is related to a certain applet running, or a tray program, but it is getting old.
fyi kdebase3-suse-9.1-18.1 and qt3 3.3.1-36.12

In my case, the taskbar&systray disfucntion happens only when i add the AppLaucher applet to the panel.

installed from SuSE 9.1 packages updated recently.
Comment 19 shift 2004-08-24 17:15:42 UTC
after recent update of SuSE 9.1 packages it works for me.
Comment 20 Flame 2004-08-25 09:51:58 UTC
Yes, SuSE has placed new RPM builds in their Supplementary folder on FTP. These builds have fixed this problem on my system (no clue how or why, they just do).

Any SuSE users having this problem should go grab the latest RPM builds at /pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE on their nearby SuSE FTP mirror.
Comment 21 Rob Sell 2004-08-25 13:58:09 UTC
Looks like the updated packages from SuSE did the trick, i can add the app launcher back to kicker and the problem doesn't come back.
Comment 22 Joachim Eibl 2004-11-19 19:02:02 UTC
I have the same problem, as was initially described in the recent KDE3.3 (compiled from CVS-src). But it isn't there after KDE is newly initialised for a user.
On my system the problem only appears when I add the KSysGuard applet into the panel and restart KDE.
When I remove KSysGuard from the panel and restart KDE, then the problem disappears again.

(I reopened the bug because it's perfectly reproduceable and I haven't seen KSysGuard mentioned before. I hope this info helps.)

Comment 23 Joachim Eibl 2004-11-19 19:10:23 UTC
Since the Qt-version seem to be important: Mine is Qt3.3.3 (RPM for Suse 9.1)
Joachim
Comment 24 Aaron J. Seigo 2004-11-21 15:21:05 UTC
Joachim Eibl: this is a problem w/certain releases of SUSE's Qt. we've already deduced that much, and as such it isn't a Kicker bug.

closing, again.
