Tried different software sources/versions (apt/snap/deb/flatpak), with similar results. Currently using flatpak. In my previous Ubuntu 18.04 installation, I did not face these problems with Okular.

Cannot confirm the bug here. Everything is rendered as it should with Liberation fonts for Helvetica and Times (not embedded into the file). What is shown on the "File->Properties->Fonts" tab for Helvetica and Times? Can you install Liberation fonts or MS proprietary Helvetica and Times fonts and try again? Thanks in advance for your answers.
Hi Yuri, thank you very much for your fast reply! It seems that Helvetica and Times are being substituted by "TeXGyreHeros" and "TeXGyreTermes", respectively. I have Liberation fonts installed and installed the MS proprietary ones, but the bug persists. Could this be related to flatpak packaging issues in mine machine?

No. It's related to TeX Gyre fonts. Uninstall them (texgyre package). Cf. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=431012
It worked! besides uninstalling them using other methods, I had to remove the fonts manually from: /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1 Thank you very much for the awesome support and the even better program which is Okular!
