Description Tobias Leupold 2021-06-13 13:59:24 UTC
This is about the usability drawback of the new start menu I already bitched about in Bug #438234, which has been marked as a duplicate of Bug #434904, but it's about an additional approach of solving this. So I think this bug has it's raison d'être, at least as a thought-provoking impulse.

The "triangle menu" implementation from Bug #434904 makes accidental category changing whilst opening the start menu happen less often, but it still happens (to me).

Still, the category list is where – imho – the favorites should be. I'd still propose to make the whole thing collapsible, so that it takes much less space, e. g. by only showing the "Applications" and "Places" icons in a small vertical icon bar at the left side, along with an arrow icon or such to show it. Or to hide it completely and let the user choose if it should be shown via a settings option.

The new menu is imho still a lot less usable than the old one ... this would bring the "old feel" back for gridlocked carpers like me without removing functionality.

Would be cool if you added this ;-)

I don't think we plan to do this. There would be no way to access the categories! This would entail basically a total rewrite of the whole thing. It sounds like what you really want is the Application Menu (AKA Kicker). It has the sort of kind of compact vertical list you describe.

If the triangle menu implementation isn't working perfectly for you, that's a bug that needs to be fixed. :) Can I ask you to file a new bug report for it? See also https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Issue_Reporting#Describe_the_problem_instead_of_proposing_a_solution

Well the problem is that where the favorites were, I now have a category list I never use, never used and don't want to use, which keeps getting opened unintentionally which leads to the favorites being gone. And there's no way to move it elsewhere (to the right, to a tab, behind a button -- everything would be better than the current state), hide it or whatever.

I really would still use Kicker if it still was shipped, but it isn't.

Well, seems like I'll have to live with that :-(

Kicker is still shipped. If you don't see it in your distro, bug your distro! :)
Comment 4 Tobias Leupold 2021-06-18 14:06:16 UTC
Actually, it's not. Not the original Kicker. But thank God somebody made it available on https://store.kde.org/p/1468103/ :-P ;-)
Comment 5 Nate Graham 2021-06-18 14:07:36 UTC
That's the original Kickoff, not Kicker ;)
Comment 6 Tobias Leupold 2021-06-18 14:11:24 UTC
Well, I'll have to admit that you're completely right :-D

But the only thing that counts is: It's the very menu we had before! Which behaves like I want it to.

Currently we are not planning to make the category list hide-able, but we do plan to make it possible to move it to the other side of the pop-up. See Bug 443082.
