Description Real Name 2015-06-03 17:00:06 UTC
Every time KDE starts, there is a blank space in the notification area that belongs to the "Networks" icon. It doesn't load unless I do any of the following: 1) systemctl restart NetworkManager.service; 2) kquitapp5 plasmashell && plasmashell &; 3) go to the System Tray settings, uncheck Networks, apply, check it again, apply, OK.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Cold boot into KDE (restarting the session doesn't always trigger the bug)
2. Wait until Plasma is fully loaded
3. Be annoyed by the lack of a widget to manage your wi-fi connections

Actual Results:
The item doesn't load at boot

Expected Results:
It should load normally like the others

Someone on my G+ post reported that the Instant Messaging item also shows the same behavior. Also, starting over after deleting the configuration files in ~/.config works UNTIL you customize the panel.
Comment 1 Richard Feciskanin 2015-06-04 08:00:15 UTC
I can confirm this with instant messaging icon problem.
The icon loaded correctly only once, during first start after plasma was upgraded from 5.3.0 to 5.3.1
Comment 2 tromzy 2015-06-04 08:21:18 UTC
I can conform with Instant messaging icon too. And like Richard, the icon displayed well only once, just after the upgrade. Before and after that, I have too check and uncheck it in the toolbox settings.
Comment 3 Paul Konecny 2015-06-04 11:54:57 UTC
I can confirm this on ArchLinux AMD64
It is sufficient to uncheck and recheck the network item in the widget preferences to get it to show up.
I've made a screencast that shows the problem.

The bug changed on my setup since Plasma 5.3.2. I was having the problem with the PTelepathy Presence icon, not the network icon. Now, the icon is there, but it is misplaced. See attachment.

I had a disappearing network icon after boot (not a blank space, icon was just gone) once I installed VirtualBox from their website (not from the stock repositories). The only way to get the icon to reappear was to restart the networkmanager service. After that, it network manager showed no available networks until I toggled airplane mode on and off.

Uninstalling virtualbox and installing the one from the repositories (albeit an old version) fixed my problem. What I'm getting at is that the issue may be caused by a 3rd party application.
Comment 9 Ruman Gerst 2015-07-19 10:00:43 UTC
I have this bug, too: Sometimes a tray icon won't appear after booting the system.

Candidates: All auto loading icons (Network, Messenger, Storages, ...)
You don't need to restart plasmashell btw., just go into the settings of the system tray and disable and reenable the icon causing this problem.

Maybe the tray is not loaded correctly when plasmashell is started the first time? Owncloud-client always shows a message box telling you that it could not find a tray (its tray icon appears anyways)

Can you try whether https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/124380/ fixes the problem? Looks like systray got confused once again.
Comment 11 Kai Uwe Broulik 2015-07-20 08:41:48 UTC
Please try again with latest plasma-workspace

I'm running plasma-workspace built from git with this patch. Did a few power cycles and, so far, no bug.
Comment 13 Paul Konecny 2015-09-08 12:41:55 UTC
I'm not sure if this is related, but I had to uncheck/recheck the new audio volume tray in Plasma 5.4 today (plama-pa not kmix)
Comment 14 Paul Konecny 2015-09-11 01:05:40 UTC
I'm confident, this is the same issue. I have to uncheck/recheck plasma-pa (Audio Volume) everytime I log in.

It seems that this is a dup of bug 352055. (But I'm not allowed to resolve this as dup ;) )
