After update from official OpenSuSE 12.1 KDE repository, appeared KDE crash report and desktop plasmoids are gone!!!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Just update opensuse KDE 4.8.3 to 4.8.4 from RPMS
2.
3.

I need a help! After update KDE plasmoids are gone, and I need only one of them Notes plasmoid, actually it's data! I lost too much precious information, that was noted there, and I'm unable to figure out, where is should store data to possibly find some remained notes from there!!! Please help!!!

Please, tell me, where usually Notes Plasmoid holds data... it's very valuable for me! Hope someone is able to help me and I hope, that this data remained somewhere on my PC, hope, that just session error occured and data is still available.

Actually, newly created plasmoids do not disappear after restart, but I need to get somehow the lost Notes-widget data(the Notes widget of screenshot is newly created). After update to KDE 4.8.4 and restart KDE started without widgets and with KDE crash message. Help me to find Notes widget data(location, where it hold's notes data), I hope some info still available there...

Ok, I found it... likely, it remained at the following path : ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc

So, anyone having the same problem can recoved data from there.... It's not very readable, but still it's better, then complete data loss.

So, my problem is somehow a bit more or less solved, please, take a look, why that crash could happen. Thanks!

There is no crash AFAICS. Changing the summary of the report to reflect the real problem.
Setting status to confirmed as I also faced the same problem on past upgrades.

Hopefully to help anyone experiencing this: I found this report because I thought I'd lost my notes also. Turned out that the upgrade had somehow changed my Activity to "Photos Activity", which isn't the one that contained my notes. Switching back to my "Desktop Icons" activity, I found my missing widgets.

I confirm with 4.10 on Kubuntu. After I just upgraded today, my desktop remained intact but for two exceptions:
 - The wallpaper was changed to the 4.10 default (annoying, but minor)
 - All my notes widgets were GONE. This includes 2 of the regular widgets as well as 1 akonotes widget.

This has happened to me so many times in the past that, upon recently searching plasma-desktop-appletsrc, I found the contents of no less than 5 different notes widgets that had once been working but then been lost. Their configuration remained in the file in its entirety. Which makes me want to suggest two steps: 1. external storage of notes as in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=272377 , 2. a way to "defragment" plasma-desktop-appletsrc. It is bad when the file keeps growing like that.

Oh, and while we're at it: There needs to be an easy way to backup and restore an entire desktop configuration as well as individual widgets.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!
