Plasma NM crashed when retrieving a password from kwallet. Usually that happens with wifi access points, so I assume you were using wifi, right? Which NetworkManager version do you use? Unfortunately the crashlog does not give much information on where exactly the problem happened. I suppose it has happened only once, right?

In bug #287289 I have a better call trace. And answers to questions of comment #1, for my case. My crashes happened several times when I boot and log in, before I can unlock my wallet for the wifi password. Maybe it is reproducible. I do not remember how time I booted since I upgraded my machine. My KDE NetworkManager service is last Fedora 16 RPM package: kde-plasma-networkmanagement-libs-0.9-0.65.rc2.nm09.fc16.x86_64 My KDE installation is a lot of RPM packages with that numbering scheme: kdebase-runtime-libs-4.7.3-10.fc16.x86_64 If you are interested in this bug, I can provide more information. My time zone is Paris (CET).
Created attachment 65960 [details] Add some debug messages to Plasma NM I cannot reproduce this problem. You can help me if you apply the attached patch to Plasma NM, recompile it, enable debug messages using kdebugdialog and send me your ~/.xsession-errors. Just do this: # git clone git://anongit.kde.org/networkmanagement # cd networkmanagement # git checkout nm09 # mkdir build # cd build # cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr .. # make && make install then call kdebugdialog, search for the string "network" and enable all checkboxes that appear. Then restart your KDE session, reproduce the bug and send me the ~/.xsession-errors file.

can someone test the latest Plasma NM vesion and check if this problem still happen? For the (K)Ubuntu users that would mean compiling Plasma NM yourself since (K)Ubuntu does not provide updates for Plasma NM yet and the version they ship is from six month ago.
if fedora has newer packages than ubuntu i could test it if you tell me how :) also i have no idea how to get the version of the plasma nm - i use the testing updates from the repo
(In reply to comment #22) > if fedora has newer packages than ubuntu i could test it if you tell me how :) > also i have no idea how to get the version of the plasma nm - i use the > testing updates from the repo Fedora provides up to date Plasma NM snapshots, it is fine to test this bug. To see the version click on "Manage Connections" -> "Other", the version string is there. But by your crashlog I can see you are using version 0.8.98, which is the latest version I have released so far. That is bad :-/ By what I saw in the crashlogs there are two crashes in two different places. I was not able to reproduce none of them here. The crashlogs are not conclusive about what is causing the problem. One of the crashlogs even indicates that the crash happens in Qt code, not Plasma NM's. Your crashlog is not specific on to where the crash really happens, it just says SecretStorage::walletOpenedForRead, but that method has several lines of code.

Can you check if this problem still happen with Plasma NM 0.8.99 (0.9.0_rc4)? PS: 0.8.99 is the Plasma NetworkManagement version, *not* the NetworkManager version.
Please enable debugging using kdebugdialog, reproduce the crash and send me the file ~/.xsession-errors (compress it if it is too big). After launching kdebugdialog search for the string "network" and mark all checkboxes that appear.
This looks like the CPU is walking off the edge of the RAM. There could be an addressing problem here.

Just to note that I've now upgraded to Plasma NM 0.9.0_rc4 (ubuntu backports) as suggested. I'll report any logs if I do still have the same problem. My previous version was 0.9~svngit.nm09.20110610.0c83d8-0ubuntu5. Not sure how easy it will be to reproduce, as for me it depended on the wireless dropping out at some critical point (#289297).
I am not confident that rc4 solves this problem. Among all the reports one recurrent thing is that the computer was unattended for some time. I think the ask password dialog crashes if the password is not entered in time. That is curious because I have not implemented any timeout in the dialog, but the request comes through dbus, which does use a timeout. I added several checks to identify where the invalid pointers are. The checks will also prevent crashes if they can, but the connection will probably stop working since the password is required. Enable debugging using kdebugdialog (search for "network" and mark all checkboxes that appear) and send me the ~/.xsession-errors when the problem happen again.

Can you all configure NetworkManager to use keyfile plugin instead of ifnet, ifcfg-rh or other plugin and test if the problem still happens? You can do that by editing the file /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf or /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf. Just change the line with "plugins=" looks like this: [main] plugins=keyfile and restart NetworkManager. I was talking with a friend about a bug he had where Plasma NM did not detect the correct WEP key type. Today we have figured out that it happens because NetworkManager was using ifcfg-rh, using keyfile Plasma NM works correctly. I think the same problem that caused my friend's problem can also cause this crash, so please test NetworkManager with keyfile plugin and report if that solves the problem or not.

Hi Lamarque, I've been trying to reproduce this now but can't, not even if I downgrade to plasma-network-management 20110610.0c83d8, which I had very recently installed at the time of my first report. Of course since then I've upgraded the surrounding software from KDE 4.7.2 to 4.7.4 as well. Also it's not unknown to me that problems arise directly after an upgrade which can never be reproduced later ...
forgive me if this isnt proper method for giving info, i believe ive upgraded as well but without fail when i goto conncect or reconnect to any wireless, wallet asks for password and crashes, i am on 4.7.4 as well > Date: Sat, 18 Feb 2012 10:07:32 +0000 > From: nick@leverton.org > To: ted.feasel@hotmail.com > Subject: [Bug 283105] networkmanagement's kded module crashes when opening kwallet > > https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=283105 > > > > > > --- Comment #45 from Nick Leverton <nick leverton org> 2012-02-18 10:07:31 --- > Hi Lamarque, > > I've been trying to reproduce this now but can't, not even if I downgrade to > plasma-network-management 20110610.0c83d8, which I had very recently installed > at the time of my first report. > > Of course since then I've upgraded the surrounding software from KDE 4.7.2 to > 4.7.4 as well. I am about to release a new Plasma NM version (just waiting for the tar.bz2 appear in ftp.kde.org). The new version has some debug messages that may help me figure out why this problem happens with you and not with me.
(In reply to comment #39) > Created an attachment (id=68634) [details] > xsession error file > > this may be related https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773205 I do not think so. My wifi card is a Intel WiFi Link 6000, which uses iwlwifi and I have never seem this kwallet crash happening here with any of the 3.x kernels I have used so far (I am using 3.2.2 now).

Ok, I figure out how to reproduce the problem now. The solution will take some time because this is a very delicate part of Plasma NM source code, today I tried some things but introduced other bugs, so I will have to think more about how to solve it without causing side effects.

Created attachment 71250 [details] New crash information added by DrKonqi kded4 ($Id$) on KDE Platform 4.8.3 (4.8.3) using Qt 4.8.1 - What I was doing when the application crashed: I had just returned from suspend-to-ram and entered the wallet password for the so that networkmanager could open a wifi connection. The screen I was on had okular running behind the kwallet popup but I doubt that is related. I am running Fedora-16 and did an update yesterday (19May12) morning. I tested again with the recently supplied update in the Fedora repo (kde-plasma-networkmanagement-0.9.0.2-1.fc16.x86_64), but am still hit by the bug. For me, it happens every time I log in from a fresh boot, but a workaround is to log out, and then log in, quickly (?) type the password for the kde wallet, and it seems to work. I haven't experimented too much with suspend/resume, but at least it has been stable through a couple of cycles. I have installed the debuginfo packages, and can provide a traceback next time it happens.

Just so you know, the problem wasn't KDE, it was the LAN conflicting with WLAN. Apparently its specific to Toshiba Satellite C655. I had to disable the LAN card in bios. I am new to all this, couldnt explain it if I wanted, but the guy who knew the answer said they have the same address or the computer thinks so anyway. (In reply to comment #190) > Lamarque, so the answer seems to be upgrade to nm0.9.0.3 from the ppa? Always use the latest stable version, which in this case is 0.9.0.9. 0.9.0.3 fixes your particular problem but there are other bugs fixed in 0.9.0.9.
Actually, I found out that the problem was actually unrelated, just timed to look like that. It was...a while ago...my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C655 was freezing up because of something to do with the networking cable connection. It wouldn't freeze if I was wired, only when I pulled the network cable. So from that I found I had to go into boot menu and turning of the LAN startup, apparently it was conflicting with wlan0. This was quite a while ago, sorry I don't remember all the technical terms, but if you are having the same problem, it may help to see if it STOPs that behavior when you boot wired. If so, google the symptoms and get a better description. I remember I had to hit F-8 right at the beginning of boot, move a few menu's over to an option to not start wired lan.
