Description jos poortvliet 2011-04-15 01:18:09 UTC
Version: 1.13.6 (using KDE 4.6.1)
OS: Linux

KMail allows to wrap mails. While I hate that, it's a necessity - apparently many mail clients can not handle unwrapped mail properly.

Unfortunately, KMail can't handle *wrapped* text very well. To be precise, it doesn't re-wrap text. If you have a wide screen monitor your message view pane still can only be be 80 chars wide and if you have a small screen sentences leave one word on the next line. Mails in a long thread get screwed up threading because words get indeed transferred to the next line making the whole "hide what ppl said previously from 3rd level onwards" not work. So the lack of re-wrapping basically breaks that feature too.

Now KNode can re-wrap quoted text in the composer (but only there, not in the viewer). Imho KMail should do that anywhere, any time: in the composer AND the viewer, making the text always fit the window, links work properly even if they are cut of by wrapping etc.

There is a number of bugs related to this, the following all have to do with wrapping and are (partially) solved if kmail has smarter (re-)wrapping:
259996 "Wrap columns" setting breaks long links in messeges
62541 The user should be able to disable word-wrapping on the preview window.
78302 links in text emails do not work when they are sent pre-linewrapped
79144 selective (paragraph-wise) word wrap
105485 Auto word wrap feature lost in saved drafts
119677 kmail line wraps inserted file
124555 Autoindent wrapped lines in the composer
151981 smart copy on wrapped, single line select
209030 long URLs with "-" in kmail are broken: are wrapped and the second part doesn't belong to the link
163609 Wordwrap breaks up URLs with dashes ('-')

Reproducible: Always

Please note that this is still relevant in KMail2 in KDE PIM 4.7.3+
Comment 2 Myriam Schweingruber 2012-08-18 07:55:10 UTC
Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
Comment 3 Luigi Toscano 2012-08-18 23:48:51 UTC
Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2
Comment 4 jos poortvliet 2012-08-20 15:22:14 UTC
Yes, this is still valid and I still really very much would appreciate this feature request to be done as pre-wrapped mails still have this nice white space to the right :D
Comment 5 Florian Fainelli 2012-10-04 15:37:26 UTC
I would also appreciate if someone fixed this issue.
Comment 6 Florian Fainelli 2012-10-23 15:31:02 UTC
Still an issue with 4:4.9.2-0ubuntu2
Comment 7 Unknown 2012-10-24 07:27:27 UTC
Agreed with #6. I do believe I saw proper behavior for a few days right after 4.9.2 hit Ubuntu's Universe repository; but now, the old behavior is back. Should we re-open another of those bugs?
Comment 8 Florian Fainelli 2013-05-26 16:24:10 UTC
Still an issue with 4.10.2-0ubuntu3, please, really bring this back.
Comment 9 Florian Fainelli 2013-11-26 19:18:26 UTC
Still an open issue with 4.11.2-0ubuntu1, but since we are screaming against the wall, this really has no importance what so ever, does it?

Please note. Florian, that this never existed in KMail (1 or 2). It is something KNode has, however.

Also - importance is in the eye of the beholder. I too would find this extremely comfortable and nice-to-have but I can't copy the KNode code myself. Unless somebody who CAN considers this important, it won't be done - that is unfortunately how Free Software works.

Most of the team is busy with fixing bugs, which I greatly appreciate - and speeding up KMail, again, awesome.

However, let me try to see if I can interest Laurent Montel, he's doing most feature work atm...

Laurent, perhaps you feel like doing this, considering KNode really is gone now... Or is KMail deprecated?
