Description San 2011-02-09 11:37:30 UTC
Version: 4.4.10 (using KDE 4.6.0)
OS: Linux

I'm unable to use contact groups for sending emails.

I've be using KDE for years, and since kde 4.0 I can't manage contact lists in any satisfactory way. Considering that Kontact is central in KDE, and how basic a functionality like contact lists are, I really do not understand why spending time on gadgets instead of core stuff (sorry for being a bit angry here. I would LOVE to have a robust and useful kmail/kontact)

I have spent hours (days) on google and forums before posting here.

Before reporting this, I have also waited to test the latest kubuntu 11.04 alpha live CD to see if things have evolved.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Here is the last experiment I made with kubuntu 11.04 alpha live CD.
(same as the "stable" kubuntu 10.04)

Even creating a new contact group is buggy:

* boot live CD
* open kontact. An error pops up concerning Akonadi
* any way, open the "contacts" tab and create a new contact "foo": with a name and an email address.
* create a "new contact group", call it "mylist", and enter the member "foo"

BUG ******-> the email address of foo is not selected! you have to enter it *manually* !

* ok, I enter it manually.
*** now I want to send a mail to the group "mylist". How do I do it ??
I think a right-click should propose "send email to the list"

* So click on the kmail tab -> New message and click "select" next to the address bar.
*****BUG : a small window pops up, letting you select contacts, but this is *empty* !

Actual Results:
impossible to use contact groups to send emails

Expected Results:
of course it should be easy, and possible
and this is a crucial feature for using kde in real life

I'd be happy to help in providing information you need.

Probably yet another duplicate of bug #223034 (which is said to be fixed in 4.5).
Comment 2 San 2011-02-20 09:13:20 UTC
but kubuntu 11.04 alpha uses KDE 4.6, and it is far from fixed.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. That other bug report claimed it was fixed in Kontact 4.5. I can't test this myself since I have Kontact 4.4.9 (with KDE 4.4.5).

Your original posting states that you have Kontact 4.4.10, so I think we both cannot enjoy the said fix yet.
Comment 4 San 2011-02-22 09:21:05 UTC
ah ok, sorry.
So, let's hope this version finds its way to kubuntu soon !
Comment 5 Robby Engelmann 2011-02-28 20:43:10 UTC
I also tried to use contact groups (alias distribution lists). I have two issues with them:

1. If I want to create such a list within Kmail's button "Save list..." in the mail editor I have a list within kaddressbook, but all recipients are created as new contacts with name and email only even if I have all recipients and mails already in the addressbook (I have two "Personal Contacts" ressources in akonadi pointing to two directories with vcard3 single files as respective sources)

2. If I create a contact group manually in kaddressbook issue 1 does not appear. But when I want to use such a contact group as recipient of a new email, kmail actually do not use these emails. Instead the email is sent to "Testitout@robby-travelmate-6292" ("contact group name@local host name")

about my system:
Kubuntu 10.10
Qt 4.7.0
PIM Version 4.6 beta4
KMail Version 2.0.89
KAddressBook Version 4.6 beta4

I hope my mal-behaviour description fits this bug? Otherwise I can post it separately?
For me, distribution lists is a quite essential feature for an email programm. Thus the priority level should be reconsidered?

I think this bug report aggregates too many points.

This is a bug that should be filed separately.

This works for me with KDE PIM 4.6.

I'm not sure whether the addressbook should always assume that you want to add people to the list that you already have in your addressbook. And of course there can be more than one foo. Anyway, this would be one issue.

This sounds like a feature request to me. You can enter the list's name in kmail's composer to send an email to that list.

Works for me with KDEPIM 4.6.

So I suggest closing this report and opening new ones, one per issue/feature request.

This works by now. Please reopen if you can still not get groups working with KDE 4.8
Comment 8 San 2012-10-04 05:44:47 UTC
sendind emails to contact groups does not work in Kubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal Beta 2 (KDE 4.9)
--> see Bug 270141
Comment 9 San 2012-10-04 07:54:51 UTC
should I change the status of this bug, or simply deal with Bug 270141?

Make sure that nepomuk semantic desktop is enabled. If that is the case, try enabling email indexing, for some reason that is required for address completion, could affect sending to groups too. Wait for contacts to be indexed, if they are not already.

You get a huge warning in kmail's composer if nepomuk is disabled. thus I think that's not it.
Comment 12 Laurent Montel 2012-10-04 18:09:07 UTC
yes but your group is not indexed.
In master there is a tools to look at what is indexed or not.

right, I had this warning in openSuse and thus enabled nepomuk (with
email indexing)

I kubuntu, nepomuk is enabled by default
Comment 14 San 2012-10-05 21:12:52 UTC
Ah, I made another try with the OpenSuse CD, but this time after creating the contact group, I closed kontact, waited for 5 min, and then re-opened kontact, and it worked !

thanks a lot for this idea of waiting...
Comment 15 S. Burmeister 2012-10-06 08:38:31 UTC
So this bug is indeed fixed and improving the usability, i.e. do not make the user wait before distribution lists work, is tracked at bug 307948
