Version: (using KDE 4.3.0) OS: Linux Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Kmail doesn't remember columns size in the messages list. Everytime I start kmail I get the horizontal scrollbar loosing screen real estate that could be displaying another message.
It is a duplicate of bug 178154. Unfortunately, it looks like it was not totally fixed. Which Qt version do you have? (running any kde program with the --version parameter from a shell).

Seems to be fixed in KDE 4.4
Glad to hear it works for *you* Björn. It remains an issue for me both in the context of standalone kmail and kmail within kontact. I'm running 4.4 and will be updating to 4.4.1 this evening. QT is qtmod-4.6.2. Arch linux with charkra (kdemod) packages.
On a general note - how is it that a bug can be resolved based on it working for one person (with no independent verification), but at the same time most bugs will not get worked on until they are verified as existing by other users and developers? The KDE bug handling process seems a little skewed in that way :-(
Does still not work here. KDE-4.4, QT-4.6.2, kmail-1.13.0 (kontact-4.4). Distribution is Gentoo Linux.
no change after and update to 4.4.1 In fact, its like the default column width calculation for the message list window consistently gets it wrong by a small amount resulting in the horizontal scroll bar being required by default. Perhaps this calculation would be easier to fix. I admit it's a minor issue for me compared with https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=223705 however... [switches back to thunderbird]
> Seems to be fixed in KDE 4.4 Not really. Standalone KMail (I simply don't use Kontact these days) is still affected by this bug. Specifically, only IMAP accounts are affected upon application restart, i.e. I open an IMAP account in KMail, manually adjust column sizes as I please, restart the app and my adjustments are gone. POP accounts preserve column size settings over restarts just alright. ilj@sega:/home/ilj % kmail --version Qt: 4.6.3 KDE Development Platform: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) KMail: 1.13.3
Can still confirm this bug with kmail --version Qt: 4.7.0 KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) KMail: 2.0.89 For me the columns are always too narrow, seems like an internal, type-specific default value is always taken instead of some logged settings. This behaviour significantly reduces useability of kmail, which is functionally already quite good.
I'm still experiencing this any time it takes more than a second or two to fetch my message list. I am using IMAP. My dist is Ubuntu. kontact --version Qt: 4.7.2 KDE Development Platform: 4.6.2 (4.6.2) Kontact: 4.4.10 kmail --version Qt: 4.7.2 KDE Development Platform: 4.6.2 (4.6.2) KMail: 1.13.6 Any hopes for a fix or workaround? It's driving me nuts.
A (poor) workaround: Right-click on columns headers and select "Adjust Columns Sizes". You have to do this each time you start kmail, but it is faster than resize columns manually.
fixed in 4.10
Still not fixed on 4.10: Qt: 4.8.3 KDE Development Platform: 4.10.00 KMail: 4.10
Can confirm this is still an issue using 4.13.1 under ubuntu trusty LTS
Could you please file a new bug for KMail2 with steps to reproduce? It might be a different issue than stated here.
