Of course this feature should not be restricted to Kubuntu only.

What 'main menu'? Are you talking about the menu where you can start programs? Or the 'Windowlist' menu?

The 'start programs' menu. It would be nice if it would be flexible though
and one could also add a custom menu or something

I'd like to have a custom menu on my middle mouse button and the option to have submenus in that custom menu for sorting my entries. Just a simple user configurable menu like the RMB context menu but with submenu option, no kickoff style. And the RMB context menu for the desktop should be user configurable too so that people can in- or decrease its functionality, length and complexity. And I also miss the option to call the kmenu (not kickoff style) from any mouse button I like.

On my KDE3 desktop I have a middle mouse button menu where I put all actions/settings I miss in the RMB menu + a dcop link to the kmenu + my most used links + my favorite applications. It is perfect, just needs the option to sort the entries with submenus and horizontal rulers.

Having more entries in context menus gives a cleaner desktop and it is much more efficient to move your hand/finger just a few milli- or centimeters in a context menu than having to travel to the menu button in the panel. IMHO KDE should be suitable for keyboard lovers, context menu lovers, desktop clutter lovers ;) and so on.

Another idea for other optional mouse button menus would be the most used applications, the last used applications, internet bookmarks. If my mouse would have that much buttons (it alas just has three) I would want to have all those menus on mouse buttons.

Comment 19 Maciej Pilichowski 2008-12-01 17:23:40 UTC
Nope. It is something different -- in short "show plasmoid on N mouse button press". If we agreed for that on RMB we would have problem -- what if there is no plasmoid, or plasmoid crashed, etc. What to show then?

RMB stands usually for context menu and this should be not changed.

Comment 21 Ernest N. Wilcox Jr. 2008-12-05 06:44:09 UTC
OK. I knew my request (but 176918) would get lost behind some loosely related bug report/request, although I think you should read the entire request before marking it as a dup to a context menu request since I really wanted to get a desktop / panel widget that would let me simply access my browser's bookmarks. Since KDE4 is an entirely different desktop than KDE3, I do not think going backward is appropriate. IMHO, the forward looking solution should be to develop a set of (possibly similar) widgets to implement these requests for the KDE3 context menu functionality - e.g.: Bookmark menu, K menu, etc.

I hope this clarifies what I am requesting, and if my request is still regarded as a dup of bug 163016, then so be it.

Thank you

If this is feature found in openSuSe 10.3 at:

Settings > Desktop > Behaviour > ...

after which one defined a custom menu activated when the middle mouse button was pressed, then it should be more than a "wishlist" severity. It is (was) a significant timesaver.
Comment 23 pablo 2009-01-05 03:02:20 UTC
Hi,

Given this functionality already exists in 3.5, is it really a `Wish'?

This is the number one reason why I'm still on KDE 3.5
Comment 24 christophe 2009-01-05 10:29:36 UTC
I've been trying kde4 with kubuntu, mandriva and opensuse and i can't find back
this essential feature :
the ability to have the standard kde application menu appearing next to the
mouse pointer, like a context menu, with a simple click on the background
menu.
I have this feature with kde3 and i use it every time. I'm certainly not the
only one in that case. I cannot imagine using kde without this basic feature.
I think the lack of this feature would definetely make my passing to kde4 as
late as possible.
Comment 25 Chani 2009-01-05 11:08:43 UTC
pablo: yes, it is a wish in our classification system.

christophe: yes, that's what this report is about. if this feature is really that incredibly important to you I guess you'll have to use kde3 a bit longer.

of course it'll be possible again (in a more flexible way than in kde3 iirc) - we have plans for this, we just haven't had time to implement them yet. perhaps for 4.3...
Comment 26 pablo 2009-01-05 12:39:30 UTC
Hi Chani,

I look forward to using, possibly, KDE 4.3. Thank you for your response and hard work.
Comment 27 christophe 2009-01-05 14:01:20 UTC
Thanks Chani, i'll use kde3 a bit longer. Waiting for this feature in kde4.3 .
Comment 28 george 2009-01-06 00:04:15 UTC
please.

left, right, center click of mouse on desk top for menus is a great feature of
kde and should not be dropped.

thank you.

Exactly, this shouldn't be a "wish" and I am very tempted to open a new problem report on it. This is functionality that we've relied on for years that is suddenly not present. This is a major bug and is the reason I haven't moved to KDE4.

To be clear, please restore the functionality that was in KDE 3.x as Control Center -> Desktop -> Behavior -> General tab -> Mouse Button Actions -> left/middle/right button -> Custom menu 1/2.

It is indeed a great timer saver. I could even configure mouse buttons in old Motif mwm, why after all these years do we lose basic capability as this? I don't want to keep moving back to kicker or the classic menu, or clutter up my desktop with shortcuts. I want customizable desktop mouse menus that can be activated when the mouse is over *any* unoccupied area of the desktop.
Comment 30 FiNeX 2009-02-02 09:35:16 UTC
Technically speaking, plasma is a different product than kdesktop. This feature has not been dropped or disabled due to bugs on the code, but simply it has not been implemented. If a feature is not implemented and users would like it, the correct way to ask it is using a "WISH". :-)

I believe you are side-stepping the problem. KDE has (for years) had this ability, and I use the word KDE in general because that is how most users view the product (not as kdesktop or plasma). If I were to make a new implementation of konqueror and not implement a basic feature such as the "back" button, you may say that it should go to a wish list, but most people would view that as a bug. If this feature was removed from the next release of KDE 3.x, would a problem report written against it be classified as a "wish"? I'm certain most users would maintain it is a real bug, not a wish list request.

You are playing with words saying plasma is not kdesktop. I don't even know that the comparison is correct, which just proves my point, it is all *KDE* to me - the end user. The KDE team has given us a new *KDE* that has not implemented a basic feature and this is against POLA. Yes, lots of things have changed, but we do not expect that basic mouse configuration options would be missing.

Comment 32 pablo 2009-02-02 15:56:06 UTC
Howdy,

At the risk of saying `me too' to Daniel's point, well .. `me-too' :p

Seriously, Daniel's konqueror analogy is spot-on because the `mouse menu' is integral to those KDE users who use KDE (notice how I intentionally have left off the version - again in support to what was previously stated).

When I upgraded to `openSUSE 11.1', I tried long and hard to find how to configure my mouse menu (KDE 4.1) and while researching, I found many users asking the same question.

I'd recommend making the `mouse menu' functionality a high priority so we can get more users (power users in my opinion) testing KDE 4.x.

And as always, I do _appreciate_ very much the developers. Thank you.

You can also say me-too by voting this sucker instead of spamming something that 211 current votes just proves that you're wrong.
Comment 34 christophe 2009-02-03 09:35:18 UTC
'me too', i think it's a bug. And i voted for it.
Actually, it doesn't matter wether it's a bug or a wish. Provided we get our application menu with a mouse click on the desktop, or plasma, or whatever....
I love the developpers and i will love them more when i can take advantage of kde4 with mouse-click-on-desktop-application-menu.
Thank you dear devs !
Comment 35 Stephan Sokolow 2009-02-04 13:22:37 UTC
Don't forget to support button numbers beyond 3. I've got a five-button mouse that I bought for the infrared laser (I have to sleep in this room, so I don't want a red glow) and buttons 4 and 5 are essentially useless because nothing on my system lets me bind actions to buttons other than left/middle/right.
Comment 36 jMax 2009-02-21 23:37:03 UTC
IMHO bug or wish is not the point. The real point is that lacking of this feature is a regression from kde 3.5
Comment 37 Richard Salts 2009-04-28 01:34:58 UTC
The windowlist is what I'm missing the most, but I also liked the conventional "application launch menu" with the terminal sessions/bookmarks/quickbrowser added. I think the new kickoff style menu might work too, although it does take up a lot more real estate ( probably not a big issue if the menu steals the foreground ).

Hi,

Unfortunately a `middle click' menu (I think you mean middle-mouse) is currently assigned to a different function. I would hope the same functionality would be kept on the right-mouse button.
Comment 42 christophe 2009-05-17 20:58:45 UTC
FineX > thanks for your answer...
Actually, any click, left, middle, or right, is able to trigger the application menu on the desktop on kde 3 . I'm sure it's possible to have the same on kde 4 .
Thanks to the developper who will hopefully implement this very expected feature .

anyways, now that my gsoc project is in trunk, you've got your menu. :)
