Description Guille Arriaza 2008-04-11 03:16:49 UTC
Version: 2.5.7 (using 3.5.7, compiled sources)
Compiler: Target: i586-mandriva-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.22.18-desktop-1mdv

If new buttons are added to the kate toolbar, whenever the user switches between 2 files, the buttons on the toolbar begin to disappear, until only the [new], [open], [previous], [next], [close] and the new buttons are left.

I have no plugins loaded. To reproduce the bug, just add some buttons to the toolbar, open two files and switch between the files some number of times (10 times for me).

The expected behavior... well, the buttons should not disappear...

This is basically a duplicate of the supposedly resolved bug 60106 (filed under Kate 2.1)... that, of course, is not resolved (under Kate 2.5.7).

Cannot reproduce on 2.5.8.
Probably it has been fixed.
Could you try to update your Kate version and re-try?

Thanks a lot!

Nothing more, but the exactly the same bug reproduced on my system.
Exactly same! Same way to get them disappeared! Same buttons remained!
Mandriva 2008, KDE 3.5.9, Kate 2.5.9, from urpmi(default RPM manager on Mandriva)

However, there is a way to get them back: in "Configure toolbars", just change something and then click "Apply" and then them come back...But that is not a good idea of using Kate...

I have noticed that some previous bugs seemed to be the same as this one, but they are about KDE 3.1. But in fact this bug is still in KDE 3.5.9.

I can confirm this on kate 2.5.8, kde 3.5.8, gentoo. I cannot reliably reproduce it however. What seems to produce the error:
1. Start new session.
2. Hit file>new
3. Switch between untitled and untitled(2) and watch buttons disappear.

Possibly related to have a custom button layout?

Same issue as #64754.
Comment 4 oldherl 2008-04-22 13:16:49 UTC
yes, same as bug 64754.
I wrote there:
You have to add a "Encoding..." button in katepartview toolbar to reproduce this.
The "Encoding..." may be not accurate. It may be "Charset Select..."

After adding that button, switch between the files, and watch buttons disappear.

Yeah, you have to add buttons to the bar before switching between the files to reproduce the bug. The steps would be:

1. Start new session.
2. Hit file>new
3. Hit preferences>configure toolbar
4. Add some button(s) to the toolbar
5. Switch between untitled and untitled(2) and watch buttons disappear.

I'm using Mandriva (now 2008.1 with Kate 2.5.9), and the bug is still there.

Following instructions in comment #5 I can reproduce in Kate 2.5.9 on kde 3.5.9. The toolbar buttons disappearing is temporary and they can be restored by restarting kate, however this is still very incovenient.

On the plus side, I cannot reproduce this bug in Kate 3.0.71 on kde 4.1 alpha 1 (kde 4.0.71).

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we lack developers, therefor, no further fixes for 3.x will be done, beside security stuff, from the kate side. Please try to use the KDE 4.x series.
