Description Casey Allen Shobe 2003-09-12 21:03:00 UTC
Version: 0.7.2 (using KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: compiled sources
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.2
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.22

GAIM has two very useful options in it's Buddies menu:

New Instant Message --> Pick an account and type a nickname. Get a chat window.

Join A Chat --> Pick an account and type a channel or chatroom name. Get a chat window.

These two very basic features are *VERY* useful, especially on IRC or when you just want to IM somebody you haven't yet talked to and aren't sure if you want to add to your list. So, I'd request the same for Kopete.

in any MSN account menu => Start chat...
in any IRC account menu => Join channel... (which should be extended to allow
to join users)

maybe this should be also added for other protocols, but that's still protocol
specific, exactly like the option "add contact" which could be added in the
account menu (per the protocol)
Comment 2 Casey Allen Shobe 2003-09-14 01:01:49 UTC
GAIM allows you to select those options from the main window. I don't want to
have to open an MSN chat with somebody on my list just so I can open the MSN
chat I really want. That's silly. The dialogue can just allow you to choose
account like GAIM.

You don't have to open an MSN chat. It's in the main window on the protocols right click.

Same with IRC.

This seems to be fixed in 0.9.0 / KDE 3.3.0
Comment 8 Olivier Goffart 2004-11-28 21:38:49 UTC
Protocol which support it seems having it.
Comment 9 duane smeckert 2005-09-25 20:35:27 UTC
It does not appear that AIM blind chat is available,
tho I know the protocol (and other clients) have support for it.

I do not want to need to add people to my buddy list just to chat.
Comment 10 Casey Allen Shobe 2005-12-01 10:21:20 UTC
Still can't do this on AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, others. Thus the need is still not fulfilled, and this bug should not be closed. There ought to be a main window menu entry for this that allows you to choose the account to use, not only have to right-click account icons, which is unintuitive.

Now that group Y! chats seem to work with 0.12.4 this is the one basic feature of gaim I find lacking on a daily basis with kopete. Most of the folks I work with use IM to communicate and I'm not about to add hundreds of people to my contact list just so I can do one-off chats. gaim also manages to have this feature. I really prefer kopete to gaim because of the UI, but this feature is something I really need.

It would also be very useful if there was a binary similar to 'kmailservice' that I could make Firefox use for 'ymsgr:SendIM?<yahoo ID>' so that I could click on ymsgr links in Firefox and pop up a chat window in kopete. (Or even do the same in Konqueror for that matter.)

This is the only missing feature that stops me from using Kopete. PLEASE add this feature. Nearly all other messenger apps have a "New Blank Message" type of feature. I am currently using Psi (XMPP/Jabber) which utilizes the feature the same way Gaim/Pidgin does. Please add this feature to Kopete in order to make Kopete to app of choice for all of us who can't be forced to add each individual contact to our lists for one-time conversations.

I cannot believe its been 5 years since this bug has been opened. Can developers confirm atleast are they ever going to fix this or not.
Comment 16 Christoph Cullmann 2024-09-18 18:27:01 UTC
Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
