Description Brandon 2003-12-10 21:39:30 UTC
Version: 0.7.4 (using KDE KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs

I would like kopete to open and instant message box to a user specified by clicking on an instant message link from a website.

example:
aim:goim?screenname=branditox ...

As a matter of fact... it would be nice to just Instant Message a person without adding them to your buddy list. A pretty easy feature! Why doesn't kopete have it? Maybe I just can't find it... but as far as I can tell.. there is no way to quickly instant message someone without adding them to your buddy list first. :(

From what I know you cannot send messages to contacts that are offline. To know if they're online you need to have them in your contactlist.

Yes, this is very logical.

This is true for how it is currently implemented... which could use some work. Being able to send IM's to people that are not on your "buddy list" is a very basic function that is in almost all instant messaging clients. For example, I might not want these people on my buddy list. I might just want to IM someone just once... and would hate to mess with adding him then removing him. Kopete, for example, should tell you, when you click send (entering the IM name, proto., and message), if he/she is on or not. Just basic stuff.

The aim:// is also in another post (my bad). so that part is a dupe.

adjusting bug header.
Btw, Kopete does not allow opening chatwindows without a valid KopeteContact so it's not really possible with current libkopete (and I'm NOT going to do any hacks for such a silly feature, besides I won't implement new features right now anyway)

just a quick comment...the windows aim client pops up a box and asks you if you want to accept their message and then you can im away after clicking yes. This would be a nice feature to have, or at least a message informing the user that they must add the other user to their buddy list first so they don't think their kopete it busted like I did today.

This is a good point. I think the logical design of how kopete works is currently skewed. Not saying anything bad about kopete... because I really like it. But it does lack very very basic functionality. This "bug" could also have some relation to some of the "bugs" that will not allow to you IM someone if they are shown as offline... but they are actually online. I don't know the technical details... but if you send the message anyways... no matter if they are actually offline or not... they will get the message if they are actually online. If they are, in fact offline like they should be, the server should return a message and kopete would tell you that. I think kopete is taking to much liberty on itself and not relying on the actual protocols network to get its information.

still that comment is utterly useless, that's what the "vote" feature is for

Is this issue being addressed?

I think it should be. I requested similar functionality some months ago (and am thus marking this as duplicate). GAIM has a File-->Open Chat that lets you pick your account from a dropdown and type in the remote party's name, and I often used such functionality to message people not yet on my list before changing to Kopete.
