Description Waldo Bastian 2004-01-01 18:13:43 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

There is no menu-entry in the server window for joining a irc-channel after you are connected to an irc server. It's not clear at all that you have to click on the connection-status icon in order to do anything useful.
Comment 1 Jason Keirstead 2004-01-02 20:00:42 UTC
This makes no sense. You can't *get* to the server window unless you already right-clicked on the account icon, so at that point you'd have already seen the "Join Channel" menu entry.

The encouraged way to join channels in IRC is to add them as contacts.

However, leaving as a wish. I do not know if a Join Channel menu entry under Chat is apppropriate, since it has nothing to do with the current chat.

I have a window that has a listview with "Contacts" as heading. It has a "Connect all" option (which "all"? I just want to connect to _one_ irc server) but no "Join channel" menu entry. Adding an irc channel as "contact" seems strange to me. In my world a "contact" is "someone".

That is the main Kopete window. Protocols can not add menu entries there, menu entries there are for the whole application only.

Adding an IRC channel as a contact is no different from adding it to a "Hotlist" in other clients. it provides a simple one click method of joining.

I don't care what protocols can or can't. I just try to get the point across that it is non-trivial to join an irc channel. Having a hotlist of channels is nice, but most irc clients that I know allow me to join an irc channel without having it in the hotlist, after all a channel may turn out to be complete boring in which case it is unlikely that I will want to visit it again. In kopete I first need to know the secret handshake before I can have a look around on an irc server.

How is right click on the account icon non-trivial? Two clicks, seems pretty trivial to me. Clicking on File -> Join Channel requires the same number of clicks.

"Not readily apparent" and "non trivial" are completely different, the former can easily be remedied with simple documentation, the latter implies that a series of possibly complex steps is involved.

Namely, as long as the Kopete manual tells you that to join a channel you right click on the account icon, I don't see it as much of an issue.

Any other remedy would need to involve adding the protocol's right click menus into the main menu somehow.

This affects all protocols, and I reported it ages ago...
