- What I was doing when the application crashed:
I was trying to open Kate with root privilages. I was logged in as a user and was attempting to run Kate from a Konsole session as SU.

The crash can be reproduced sometimes.

Do not do it that way.  Run "kdesu kate" as normal user instead in that case  .

Thank you very much. I have been away from Linux for almost 10 years and a lot has changed. I really appreciate the help.
