- Does it happen all the times ? - Have you tried with a different widget stlye ? (Cleanlooks/Plastique/Oxygen) ? - Did you manually installed Qt4.6 ? Do you know if the knetworkmanager version you are using was compiled against this Qt version ? Thanks NO, it happens on the first run mostly, but not every time. I haven't tried different style, will try it later. I have Qt4.6 installed from openSUSE repository. Have no idea what version was used to compile it against. *** Bug 216003 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** From bug 219643: --- Steps: 1. Close laptop lid and make it suspend to ram. 2. *** Bug 222946 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** concerning comment #8, since the original crash report (#1) does not mention oxygen at all, but crashes at the same place (QAction::isSeparator), I don't think this might be oxygen-related. ** Bug Description **
I don't know if additional backtraces are helpful at this point, but here's mine. I simply created a custom wired connection to try and set up a fixed IP address on my desktop PC. After creating the connection, when I went to select my newly created connection to connect to, it crashed right as I clicked on it.

Created a new VPNC connection.
Clicked that item in the knetworkmanager context menu to initiate the connection - knetworkmanager segfaults.
Don't know if the problem is widget related - will try a different style.
Could it be significant that the VPN connection appears below the first menu separator?

I cannot explain how this happened. I've tried to connect and disconnect more than 30 times now. With the plastique theme. Without bumping into this problem again. I also claimed in bug 233825 that this would happen every single time I disconnect (using the oxygen theme). That proves to be wrong. It can also happen when I try to connect, and it does not crash every single time I disconnect. When I'm using the oxygen theme it will crash very often. Close to 50% of my attemts to disconnect and probably below 20% of my attempts to connect. Note this test was kind of artificial, as I was sitting and pressing connect/disconnect without doing anything else. It at least feels like the crash percentage upon disconnect was higher during normal usage, if not 100%. Is it oxygen-related? I'll leave the conclusions to you. I've never seen any correlation to this between the theme being used (not to say there isn't). It seems to happen upon the first time after I boot up. After the initial attempt and crash, then signing into VPN works fine. Created attachment 42736 [details]

The Knetworkmanager crashes after i activate a vpnc connection to our company network for the second time. The first time the connection is established and works without a problem. But after a disconnect and reconnect knetworkmanager crashes with the attached stack trace and i have no internetconnection. After a restart of knetworkmanager everything works again, till i start the second vpn connection. I am using Opensuse 11.2 with the Factory KDE and Networkmanager Repos.

The network manager crashed after the following sequence of actions:
---
Powering up the system from a Suspended to RAM state
connecting iPhone to the system, configured to use iPhone's tethering
iPhone wasn't connected to any network provider, hence there was no 3G connection available
As soon as there was a network and cellular data network activated, clicked on net manager icon in systray
Because tethering (wired IP) didn't get activated somehow, automatically, clicked on the iPhone wires IP profile
and that's when it crashed.

1st time configured vpnc connection. Stable crash when i click on it through the system tray
Some observation from my day-to-day usage: When I right-click on the icon to open the context menu, then click somewhere else to close it again, then right-click again and NOW choose the VPN/static IP configuration, it (almost) never crashes. I'm not sure whether the crash is actually completely gone (would need some more observation), but it is by far less likely. Maybe this helps to track down the issue? Thanx a lot. No more crashes with this workaround. I wanted to get rid of KWallet password dialog on every connection attempt, which was the only solution to connect to protected Wifi.
At least was, so this is why I tried to set an empty password for the wallet after several version upgrades.
When selecting the wireless network, KNetworkManager crashed.
However, restarting it and selecting again the wireless network opened the KWallet dialog without asking me for password, but simply if to grant access or not to KNetworkManager, which then successfully connected (to an unprotected network, so far)

I had to do this before moving from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04; It is not as buggy and doesn't integrate as badly as one could fear. knetworkmanager always crashes when I try to establish a vpnc connection.
Using Kubuntu Maverick alpha2 + all updates - a MS PPTP VPN seems to be working fine, have connected/disconnected multiple times. Additionally the GUI is looking very slick. ::crossed-fingers::knock on wood:: kde4-config --version Qt: 4.7.0 KDE Development Platform: 4.4.90 (KDE 4.4.90 (KDE 4.5 RC1)) kde4-config: 1.0 It looks like I added my comment to a duplicate bug - in KDE 4.4.2, it crashes if you click the network name/label (irrespective of type of connection). If you click below the label, it works fine. I perceive that since many weeks on Fedora 13 the problem happens very rarely. *** Bug 243349 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 243726 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 242972 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 243799 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 243720 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 241614 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 241543 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 240934 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 240915 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 240550 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 237211 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 237148 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 236660 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 236487 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 236284 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 236168 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 236165 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 235988 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 235877 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** This is 100% reproducible in Kubuntu 10.04, every singe time I try to select a static IP configuration. I have configured a basic OpenVPN installation that works when I launch the openvpn service with a normal configuration (in /etc/openvpn/ with a client.conf and static.key). Using knetworkmanager instead (after I
removed the configuration in /etc/openvpn and created in configuration in its configuration window) makes knetworkmanager crashes each time I try to connect to the VPN.

When I use the knetworkmanager applet in the taskbar to select my pptp VPN connection it will crash roughly 90% of the time, if I am persistent in restarting it then it will eventually connect. I have had the same problem using Kubuntu but not with Fedora, as far as I'm aware I've used the same KDE release with each of them.

I can confirm the fact, that the crash occur if click is made on icon (left) or on the label. It never crash if you click on the right part of the panel ( where the disconnect icon come when online ) I can offer to run a dbg or something like that in needed, just explain the way to do it. I get this annoying crash every time I try to connect to VPN using PPTP. No solution to use PPTP with Kde ???
there is solution: i delete this plasmoid, and install another (by default in 10.10 kubuntu). Sorry, i forgot about name, some like "networkmanagement" So why can't this be solved once and for all I only installed plasmoid "plasma-widget-networkmanagement" that removed "network-manager-kde" and after that my PPTP VPN connection works very well If network-manager-kde is buggy why keep it? *** Bug 255970 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Hooray! - What I was doing when the application crashed:
Through the KNetworkManager icon I changed eth0 to a static IP. This happens every time KDE starts unless I open Kopete before. If I do so, Kopete asks me my KWallet password and I guess that then, my KWallet remains open. KNetworkManager is usually able to switch the network connexion then. "Usually" because in some rare cases, it still crashes after.

*** Bug 271461 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 271560 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 271722 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** This is an old bug, I tried to fix it last week but no success. Anyway: 1. It only happens in monolithic knetworkmanager. It does not happen in the plasmoid version (Plasma NM). 2. OpenSuse 11.4 ships an old Plasma NM snapshot from November of last year, which has several bugs (including crashes) which are already fixed in the latest snapshot. 3. The monolithic version is deprecated and unmaintained. I tried to fix this bug because it is the most often reported bug. I have had no success so far and I have other priorities towards Plasma NM so I think this bug is not going to be fixed soon. My advise is use the plasmoid version. Hi Lamarque, Thanks for your efforts in diagnosing this problem and providing the above information! It turns out I was unwittingly using the deprecated, monolithic knetworkmanager daemon. At the risk of pointing out the obvious, here's one way to check if you're running the deprecated daemon: ps -C knetworkmanager >/dev/null && echo "You are running the deprecated, monolithic knetworkmanager daemon" I'm running Debian sid. For those who are in a similar position, simply installing the "plasma-widget-networkmanagement" package is sufficient to install the plasma-based network-manager: sudo apt-get install plasma-widget-networkmanagement I was then able to add the "Network Management" widget to the tool-bar. Logging out and back in completed the switch-over. None of the network settings were lost and connections are managed with the familiar window. I've tried connecting to the VPN a few times without any crashes. This isn't conclusive (the monolithic knetworkmanager had its good days), but it's promising. Thanks again, Paul. *** Bug 242821 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 273569 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 274591 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 275967 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 276446 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 276700 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 277448 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Created attachment 61902 [details]
