The OS I am using now: Mandrake 9.1 RC2. The KDE version there is 3.1.0 The drive is Ricoh Combo CDRW/DVD 20x40x10. I checked now, and the problem is still there.
And it is probably related in some way to the hardware - I've got none of the problems on an IBM NetVista wkst. with Mandrake 8.2.
Same problem here: Playback stops randomly after roughly one minute. I'm using an external USB-CDROM (Pioneer DVR-K05).
Same problem with pclinuxos .93 and kde 3.5.3, but works fine with slackware, suse, arch, and openbsd.
