Version: 1.6 (using KDE 3.5.1, Kubuntu Package 4:3.5.1-0ubuntu0breezy1 ) Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.12-10-686 When playing an audio CD, KsCD stops unpredictably when playing a track. This has happened with different CDs, at different times, and appears to have been noticed by other users of (K)Ubuntu Breezy as well: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=125085&highlight=kscd http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=122438&highlight=kscd http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=117130&highlight=kscd AFAIK, this is bug did not exist with (K)Ubuntu Hoary. If this bug is not due to KsCD but is unique to the (K)Ubuntu distributions, I will appreciate being told so, so that I may file a bug report at the Launchpad.
Same problem here, Ubuntu 5.10, kde 3.5.1, kscd 1.6, several cds...
It seems that if dma on the drive is set off (I don't know why, but is Ubuntu default) the driver stops playing. If is set to on, the problem still appears, but with much less frequency. Playing the same cd on xmms works fine with dma on, but is a little rought with dma off.
Same problem on mandriva 2006 kde 3.5.1, kscd 1.6 with several cds for which this kind of problem doesn't appear with amarok, xmms, cdp. One other problem with one cd which has a long track (the fifth is 39' long!!!) : kscd recognizes the track, find its name with cddb, but is not able to play it at all . I can hear it with amarok, xmms, (but they don't play it directly with the sound card cable) and with cdp which uses correctly cddb, and play it correctly and directly through the soundcard cable. I bought a new dvdrom reader thinking my old one was having problems!!! But it's the same thing with the new one!!!
I can confirm this problem with an external USB-CDROM (Pioneer DVR-K05). CDs stop playing roughly after a minute, but sometimes after a few seconds and sometimes after a longer period of time. When the "play"-button is pressed again, it usually works fine. But most of the time, the first song is stopped at some point. The problem did not exist with older versions of KsCD.
Btw, this is not an Ubuntu-specific bug: I'm using Suse 10 with KDE 3.5.2. I also propose to set the severity of this bug to "grave", since it makes KsCD almost unusable. Apart from that: Great software! Thanks to everybody who is contributing to this project.
The problem is always here, even after having updated to KDE 3.5.2. With Mandriva 2006 and several kernels (2.6.12.18mdk-1-1, 2.6.14.2mdk-1-1, and on multimedia patched kernels 2.6.12-12mm.13mdk-1-1 ,2.6.14-0mm.7mdk-1-1) No prob with cdp! No prob with amrok and xmms!
I'm on Slackware-current (with HAL/DBUS/pmount added) which has KDE 3.5.2 and have noticed that CDs stop playing whenever anything else is mounted or unmounted. It happens when a USB key is inserted. It happens whenever I try to open the "Storage Media" folder, or when I try to access media:/ . It even happens when I manually mount/unmount hard drive partitions from a terminal window. Interestingly, on another setup I also cause CDs to stop playing under KDE 3.4.x (without any form of auto-mounting enabled) by accessing the "Storage Media" folder. On both setups I am running kernel 2.6.16.14. Also, on both setups, this occurs with every CD player app I've tried - KsCD/Play, xmms and mplayer.
I get same behavior but it's not kscd. Upon inserting media stick while playing a cd the cdrom spins like crazy like its being polled or remounting. Think this is a hal/ioslave issue or whatever is responsible for the automount process...
Everything seems to stop KsCD from playing, mounting a USB-stick, an Audio Cd on another drive (which leads to a real conflict; which one will it now play?) Sometimes just spontaneouly it stops. Sometimes when moving the Kmix across the screen. (no way to display all 35 controls like Alsa-mixer). Opening Gnome mixer sometimes works to kill the play. I get messages like this when inserting a USB-stick: Jun 11 16:28:19 Box11 -- MARK -- Jun 11 16:29:16 Box11 kernel: hdd: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Jun 11 16:29:16 Box11 kernel: hdd: packet command error: error=0x30 { LastFailedSense=0x03 } Jun 11 16:29:16 Box11 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Jun 11 16:29:16 Box11 kernel: ATAPI device hdd: Jun 11 16:29:16 Box11 kernel: Error: Medium error -- (Sense key=0x03) Jun 11 16:29:16 Box11 kernel: "47 00 00 00 02 00 46 34 4a 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 " Jun 11 16:29:19 Box11 kernel: hdd: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Jun 11 16:29:19 Box11 kernel: hdd: packet command error: error=0x40 { LastFailedSense=0x04 } Jun 11 16:29:19 Box11 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown The /dev/hdd is a Ricoh MP-9120A 1.30 The /dev/hdc is a Plextor 712-A 1.09 and seems to have less problems with KsCD. # hdparm /dev/hdd /dev/hdd: IO_support = 1 (32-bit) unmaskirq = 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on) keepsettings = 0 (off) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 256 (on) HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device # uname -r 2.6.16.16-kanotix-1
The /dev/hdd Ricoh MP-9120A and AmaroK don't work together but with /dev/hdc Plextor 712-A works. Gnome-CD stutters at times with the /dev/hdd but is OK with /dev/hdc. Rythmbox works with /dev/hdc but not at all with /dev/hdd. ("unknown playback error") AmaroK works with /dev/hdc but not at all with /dev/hdd. Unplugging a USB-stick stops the playing always either /dev/hd_. (no clue from -tail -f /var/log/messages.) strace don't work during playing of KsCD only starting it up.
I am experiencing this behaviour on my Laptop (SuSE 10.1) every few minutes. Actually I cannot listen to more than two or three tracks without kscd suddenly stopping. I did not figure out why it happens, but amarok has the same problem when playing oggvorbis, so I think it is a hardware problem.

I am experiencing the same on SuSE 10.1, with KDE 3.5.1 and then with all other KDE updates 3.5.2, 3.5.3 and now with 3.5.4. Kaffeine does not seem to be affected by this problem, so this must be peculiar to KsCD.
same here.... still exists with Suse 10.1 ... too bad. Makes KsCD unusable.
Dear KsCD Maintainer, This problem, which makes KsCD completely unusable was first reported more than 7 months ago. Do you read bug reports at all? Will this ever be fixed? Maybe in KDE 4? Or must we swith to GNOME to be able to perform such a tremendously difficult task with KDE 3.5.x as listening to an audio CD without the software stopping somewhere during playback, because this is too difficult for KDE to fix?
The problem remains with mandriva One 2007 RC2 (live Cd), and KDE 3.5.4. Kscd is the only one to work wrong (no prob with Amarok) : it stops randomly when playing an audioCD (even when it is the only one task working on the computer). There is never any problem with KDE 3.4.2 and Mandriva 2006 (when I had those problems with KDE 3.5.1 and 3.5.2, even after having changed my DVD reader, thinking it was an hardware problem... I downgraded to 3.4.2 which works well)....
mandriva 2007 powerpack (official release with all updates until today) KDE 3.5.4 KsCD 1.6 kernel 2.6.17.6mdv kernel multimedia (realtime) 2.6.17.13-3mdv KsCD always randomly stopping when playing an audio CD. It can stop when there is no other task... it can stop once in the middle of a track, or after having been restarted stops again anywhere else, or play the same audioCD without any problem! No problem with amarok, nor with VLC, xmms, cdp, grip Will there be a bugfix in kde 3.5.5 ?
No, there won't be a bugfix in KDE 3.5.5. It's still there with on a Gentoo Linux x86 box.
I am using KDE 3.5.8 and this bug is still there...anyone know if it is fixed in the new 3.5.9?
Still here with 3.5.9 ! I don't use kscd anymore! I use Amarok to read my CD
This issue was first reported as bug 37754 in KDE 2 in 2002 but closed when KDE 3 came out without being fixed. It seems unrelated to distro (I'm using Fedora, KDE 3.5.6 and kscd 1.6) but may be affected by permissions on /dev files. Try making whatever the /dev/cdrom link points to (such as /dev/hdc) non-writeable and report whether it helps. When I did that, kscd still stops once but after that gets through the whole CD. If it is due to some other program accessing the drive and stopping playback, then the bug is that kscd does not open the device non-shared.
