Still there KDE 4.7.4. Would be nice to have an option to switch back to "old-style" display of holidays. E.g. holidays are in colored frames, without side-panel.
So when you uncheck "Display events", what should it do? The side panel should disappear as well as the colored frames, except blue one for current day?
Ideally, it would be nice to have an option to switch to old-look, which was great (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=282688 for similar request). I assume "Display events" means "display user events from the kde pim", so it is fine (add a tooltip maybe?) There is no separate option to disable side-panel and keeping colored boxes. Side-panel in calendar applet which takes more space than the actual calendar, seriously? Also, if one switches off both events and holidays, the side-panel disappears and calendar stretches to another extreme (and impossible to resize). The old 4.6 calendar window size was closer to the optimal.
I agree. The calendar widget should have option which would allow to hide the side panel with events and holidays etc. and leave only the calendar with colored rectangles around days in which some events occur or there are some holidays.
For "Display events" I will request a string exception for 4.8 to add the tooltip because it is indeed confusing. I asked around and "events" refers to Akonadi Calendar resources events. Hiding holiday resources is done in the list by setting all calendars to "Not used" The layout of the whole calendar should be rethought as you also mention in bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=282688 If "Display events" is checked and there is no Pim event and also no holiday resources, the area on the left of the calendar is blank.
This bug still exists in KDE 4.8. It is very annoying because the right pane which shows the events is too small here and only shows the events one or two letters per row (on my main computer I have the calendar in a sidepanel always visible and on my notebook the clock is at the right end of the panel so that the calendar popup has not enough space to show the event pane in full width too). The right event pane just takes up space and gives really no information. I expect to get rid of that nasty right pane when I deselect the "show events" option. For me it means that the events are not *always visible" but on demand in tooltips (former behaviour). Of course the colored frames should be shown too. The right pane view only works when the clock is in the panel and a few inches away from the right edge, or when the calendar is used as stand-alone widget on the desktop.

I don't think so, this one is about the events showing despite having been disabled, e.g. it will start Akonadi even if the users doesn't want that. Bug 282688 is only about the visual aspect e.g. the layout of the widget.
I did not understand this. I thought the reporter mixed "events" (which are Akonadi PIM events) with Holidays Events. I cleared this with an added tooltip about "events" Then comments #6 or #8 refer to layout which is https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=282688 Can someone confirm that "Display events" unchecked still displays PIM events?
Event is event for me, no matter if it is a holiday event or a kontact event. So I expect the option to disable events disables the sidebar. If it does not in my opinion the description of the option is too unprecise.
The option IMHO should be described as something with the name akonadi in it so you know it just refers to that events and has nothing to do with the layout.
I agree that the word "events" is way too vague. "Display Akonadi events" is a bit too long though in this dialog.
Too long? There is lots of space here, you could even write "display Akonadi events" twice, even in German ;). And it would REALLY clear what this option does.
Maybe you could add a tooltip for this option like "display only holiday events but not akonadi events".
I really, really wish this were fixed. It has been there for years, literally; the silly panel on the side is just a horrible annoyance, that nobody, nobody ever needs. Can we please get rid of it?
As stated in comment #7, you can already disable all events (PIM events and holidays). What is missing is a simple checkbox to disable all holidays, this is bug 300094. The bug title says that it does show Akonadi events when events are disabled, but the description mentions holidays, not PIM events, so I assume the reporter did not know that there is a difference. If you believe this bug to be present after reading all comments of bug 300094, please reopen. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 300094 ***
I renamed /usr/lib/kde4/plugins/designer/kholidayswidgets.so to some random filename and also deleted /usr/share/calendar/calendar.usholiday along with doing "rm /usr/share/kde4/apps/libkholidays -R" and after that i restarted plasma-desktop and my clock had the default theme with all the holidays and events gone, exactly what i wanted, of course its just a temp solution.
