Description Igor Strelnikoff 2011-09-24 14:07:52 UTC
Version: unspecified
OS: Linux

In KDE 4.6.h was an old calendar and the calendar which looked very good, but a description of the holiday date to appear in a separate window on top (see figure 2 and 3).

In KDE 4.7.x calendar window has been merged with the box describing the holiday, because of what the calendar window has been heavily compressed, and now does not look very nice on the desktop.(See figure 4)

In this checkbox turns off the display window does not work holidays. (See figure 5)

Also, if you set the menu below does not use the holidays, the calendar is stretched out of proportion (see figure 1).

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
Click on the clock in the taskbar

Expected Results:
I suggest to place a window above the calendar, holidays, or to place the widget on the side of the button allows you to deploy a fully widget. In the collapsed state is only visible to the calendar and expanded in a region for the holidays.

New calendar in 4.7 clock widget is unbelievable, the "event" side panel is wider (!) than the actual calendar. It makes the main function (calendar) hardly usable.

Please make an option to choose old-style 4.6-like calendar look (which was very convenient).

I agree with #6.

It is difficult to believe that anyone ever thought this calendar pop-up was in any way acceptable, or even usable. It hurts a person's eyes just looking at it. The weekday names are not legible, the size of the calendar does not seem to be adjustable. There is no obvious way to make the week numbers go away. There needs to be a way to disable the right-hand panel entirely.

Does anyone out there have the authority to ditch this calendar pop-up, and replace it with the old one, before 4.8 hits release?

As the pop-up is appearing for me in 4.8, there has been improvement, in that the calendar is at least legible now. There still needs to be a way to resize both panels of this plasma widget. It is my feeling that it should be possible to completely disable the right-hand panel.
Comment 13 Janet 2012-05-31 12:53:14 UTC
Please add an option to completely get rid of the right calender pane with the events etc. because now it is not possible anymore to use the calender in a vertical panel, it tries to display the right pane one letter below the other. Please add an option to get tooltips for the events etc. For me kontact events and holiday events are "the same", I want them just in a tooltip not in a sidebar.
Comment 14 Janet 2012-05-31 13:05:34 UTC
I just learnt from Bug 281464 that the option to disable the events is NOT for disabling all events which would mean to disable the sidebar as I expected but just for disabling akonadi events. So the option should be labeled with "akonadi events". Nonetheless the calender widget needs an option to disable the right sidebar, at least when the widget is in a wide panel where it is shown as calendar and not as icon.

This is why the widget needs an option to disable the right pane with the events. Instead it should be possible to get tooltips that show the events on mouseover.

Apart from the problem with the panel the widget with its sidebar looks really good and is very handy.

"events" is too vague for users, change to "PIM events"

Comment 19 Manuel López-Ibáñez 2012-07-30 08:57:30 UTC
I think a better layout would be:

1. Show just the calendar like done in previous KDE versions.
2. If the user clicks on a day, open a pane (nice slide effect, away from the borders, that is, either to the left or to the top, to not move the calendar under the user's pointer) showing the events for that day.
3. Add a button (X or arrow) to close the pane.

A tooltip can either mention the events or say "Click to display events of this day".

Currently, there is a black square, emtpy most of the time. that is bigger than the calendar (plus the calendar is distorted) and serves no clear purpose until you accidentaly hit a day with some event.
Comment 20 Manuel López-Ibáñez 2012-07-30 09:01:21 UTC
If someone offered some tutoring, I will be willing to give my idea a try. I know C++ but almost nothing about QT and nothing about KDE libraries.
Comment 21 Janet 2012-07-30 09:44:49 UTC
+1 for Comment 19, except that I'd exect the calendar panel to expand to the bottom or left because my panel is at the top. I also have a clock on the desktop, left side. There I would expect the calendar to expand to the right or bottom. I guess, some "AI" is needed here ;).

I'm pretty sure this is resolved in KF 5.
Calendar look great now out of the box.
