Description Gerhard Braendle 2009-06-15 22:16:31 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.3)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

With "Folder View" enabled (and Plasma "lock widgets" is false), none of the icons (*.desktop files) shown on the desktop may be repositioned. When an icon is dragged and dropped to a new position on the desktop, it simply jumps back into its original position.

But when the "Folder View Settings" are changed to "Show a custom folder" and the /home/user/Desktop folder is selected, the relocation of icons is possible (but also the do show their .desktop extension then). [see http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/413390-unlock-position-kde4-desktop-items.html#post1978171]

This effect started a few weeks ago with the installation of some patches by the Updater Applet.

This looks related to bug 177594. Could you try to update to the KDE4.2 series to see if it is indeed fixed ?
Thanks

Thanks Dario.

It was real scary. Once I got the SuSe Factory KDE repository set up
and got the upgrade going, it crapped out with "can't find file
messages" after the screen saver kicked in. After my vocabulary lesson,
I bit the bullet, aborted and tried again after killing the screen
saver. It was successful.

You'd think it would ask me to at least restart X, if not reboot. Well,
after the reboot I was able to move my icons around again!

Thank you profusely. If you're ever in Denver, Colorado you have an
invitation for lunch.

Thanks again.

Mikey...

P.s. Oh yeah, mark this one resolved.

@dr.mikey@weeg.org: I'm glad it now works for you ;).
Let's wait for the answer of the original reporter of the bug. Thanks

I think the cause was when I sorted icons by name while they were
locked.

I had moved icons in the past, only to discover that the plasma thing
in the corner, the panel at the bottom, and the icon placement all
needed to be unlocked or there is no moving allowed.

I don't know if that helps or not.

Comment 6 Gerhard Braendle 2009-07-18 23:10:18 UTC
Bug is fixed, at least with my system!
After having upgraded to KDE 4.2.4 the icons could be positioned at will.
Thanks a lot to Dario and this great community!

PS: I was a bit late with the upgrade - and this feedback - as I did not want to upgrade without backing up my original system first.
Also upgrading from KDE 4.1 to 4.2 is a bit tricky for a KDE/Linux greenhorn like me :-)

No problem. I'm glad this works now. Closing as WORKSFORME. Thanks!
