Description Miguel Chavez Gamboa 2008-02-23 06:30:59 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.1)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
OS: Linux

Enabling Blur effect causes some strange lines drawn in menu items when the cursor is over it and around a widget like a line edit. This happens about 70% of the time, the other 30% the widgets are drawn correctly.

Disabling blur make this strange behavior disappear.

kde 4.0.1 on archlinux. Nvidia 7150 (nvidia driver).X Server 1.4.0.90.

Not sure whether I'm seeing the same thing, but I'm attaching a screenshot of my desktop with the Blur effect gone wrong. Hope this helps.

I think that I am also seeing a similar problem, each time something is repainted there is a ~3px border around what actually needs to be repainted. You can see this effect with the show paint plugin. This border is not painted properly and instead the immediatly window below is painted. Repainting the window by moving it slightly paints it back properly.
Comment 4 Georg Wittenburg 2008-06-20 19:28:56 UTC
The problem seems to be gone with KDE 4.0.82 and nvidia 173.14.09. However, as it wasn't straighforward to reproduce before, I'd give it some more time before closing this bug.
Comment 5 Georg Wittenburg 2008-06-20 20:38:21 UTC
The problem is almost gone. The only way to reproduce it is by zooming out with the Plasma icon in the top right corner. This draws a miscolored border around the affected region. I doesn't happen if the blur plugin is disabled.
Comment 6 lucas 2008-06-21 05:17:35 UTC
Happens all the time with me with nVidia drivers 173, but not at all with drivers 169. It's not a solid color for me but rather an offset version of the screen. To reproduce just slide desktops with desktop grid then move the mouse over windows.

*me too*

current kde-svn, qt4.5-rc1, nvidia-drivers-180.29

searched for two month now until i found out about the direct rendering/blur connection. i still have this with widgets on the desktop causing those textured "borders" beeing visible in gwenview fullscreen or kaffeine fullscreen

Kwin blur side effect

Is this related ? every time i turn on the blur effect in kwin, it seem's nice but i get strange border behavior see screen-shot
Comment 16 Shayne Johnson 2009-05-24 02:21:07 UTC
I'm having the same issues as described above.

This is a screenshot (link below) of what happens when I activate KdeSudo. the same problem occurs in Gwenview when viewing images full-screen. I am also experiencing the strange glowy borders around krunner and plasma tooltips, and the entire desktop shifting up by one pixel when blur is enabled. With blur off, none of these issues exist.

I have tried every NVidia driver there is to no avail, and every version of KDE from 4.0.0 to 4.2.85, from Qt 4.3 to 4.5.1 (all i've tested), experiences the same issues. I'm currently running KDE 4.2.85 with Qt 4.5.1 and the 185.18.10 NVidia driver.

for the records:
looks like it's fullscreen effect related
Comment 18 Andreas Pietzowski 2009-05-24 14:49:02 UTC
Yesterday I bought a new Nvidia card. Its a GeForce 9600 and the strange effects are not there anymore. Before I used a GeForce 7600 GS which caused the problems described above.

So it seems to be fixed with newer cards and maybe other nvidia code which is used by X.

As there will be a new blur effect in KDE SC 4.5 it does not make sense to keep this report open. If the new blur effect should show the same issue, it is a new bug unrelated to this one.
