Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.90) Installed from: Gentoo Packages With KDE 3.5_beta1. I have 6 desktops (1 screen). I have the pager applet set to show the wallpaper on each desktop. But when KDE starts, only the first is shown, the others are grey. Then, as I visit each desktop, the wallpapers are shown.
kdesktop only signals when there is a wallpaper updated (according to it). on startup, this should happen with each desktop. however, if it delays loading of the desktop, then it won't send this signal and the pager can not receive these updates. there is absolutely nothing i can do about this given the current design of things.
Fair enough. Couldn't the applet scan the desktops every ten seconds, looking for changes?
no, that's not how it works. the only way to make this any better would be to have the pager render the backgrounds itself. this would be even heavier, however.
In most cases, the wallpaper is fairly static from one session to the next. So a possible workaround might be to cache a thumbnail (a very tiny one!) of each wallpaper. Then, at login, initially set the pager to the thumbnail. Provided that you update the thumbnail when you update the pager, this will remain self-consistent. This will cover 99% of the times.
Aaron is the official maintainer now :-)

Kicker is currently unmaintained, you can look to your distribution for help if they still support KDE3, however.
