Description Lincoln Yeoh 2005-01-13 11:31:31 UTC
Version: 1.6.2 (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

Bug 32305 was not resolved.

Saving regularly is a good habit.

I think the assumption that you only save when you are done or want to continue later is pretty much invalid. I doubt KMail has a way of retaining whatever people work on even if OS/Power/X/KDE fails.

It is irritating to save, and then have to reopen the draft.

KDE/X is not that reliable. Even if my GUI apps are still running after X screws up, I don't know an easy way of saving my work without the GUI. This has happened more than once - whilst messing around with the screensaver, and another time when messing around with vmware.

I'm not even sure if the Kmail draft architecture is that reliable looking at the bug reports (e.g. the one where messages are lost on sending if the mail server or whatever barfs - allegedly the composer closes and the message isn't saved to the drafts folder - I'd have thought the message would be saved first before sending, so even if the system crashes the message is not lost ). IMO, messages should never be removed or deleted unless the user explicitly does it.
Comment 1 Thiago Macieira 2005-01-13 15:06:11 UTC
The messages you are composing *are* saved automatically from time to time. To test this, open a compose window, start writing, then after a while, "killall kmail".

When you start KMail again, a compose window will be opened with your typed text.

Note this is a periodic save. If the power fails, you may lose the last minutes or so of work (in addition to the fact that even if KMail had saved, the filesystem driver might not have written to disk yet).

Periodic saves are good but no substitute. They are for the times you forget to save or you are dragged away from your computer before you can save or there's a power failure.

With manual saves you are more likely to know what state the work was when you last saved, and you are able to save at a known critical point. It is annoying to have to reopen a draft every important paragraph.

Also it would be good if a manual save forces a sync (of the relevant data/files if possible, otherwise a system-wide sync is better than no sync) to disk.

Look in File->Save As Draft in the composer window. You can attach a shortcut to it if you like. Marking this as WORKSFORME.
Comment 4 Lincoln Yeoh 2007-03-26 04:12:53 UTC
kmail 1.8.2 (suse 10.0, kde 3.4.2 lev b) still closes the compose window when I select "save in drafts folder" or use a keyboard shortcut to do it.

I find this annoying, saving should be a different action from closing.

I don't see a good reason why there is no obvious way to save without being forced to close and reopen.

Periodic saves are NOT a good reason for this misfeature, periodic saves are for when the user FORGETS to save.

This bug report seems to be closed (worksforme) by mistake. Bram Schoenmakers comment 3 doesn't really reflect the problem. Sure, you can save by File->Save As Draft but then the composer window gets closed. This behaviour is part of this bug report (compare also 32305). Please mark this report is as 'reopened'.

Please compare also the duplicates 37345 and 134991 for getting a picture.

BTW: This problem already was reported in 2001 (compare 33953) and then without any comment marked as fixed.

Yes, it seems so.

So this bug is more than TEN years old and nobody ever fixed it?
Thats just insane. :(
Kmail is very great but this "function" just prevents me from saving my drafts while I write my emails :(
I cant belief this was intentioned this way...
Comment 9 Laurent Montel 2013-03-10 19:11:23 UTC
it was created in 2005 so not 10 years :)
"I cant belief this was intentioned this way..." it's.
Sorry but for the moment we can't change it.
Sorry if you can't use kmail because there is this bug...
Comment 10 CaCO3 2013-03-10 20:01:50 UTC
The first report for this got opened 12 years ago: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33953 :)
Why can it not be changed?
Whats the reason for it?
I remapped Ctrl-S now to the spell checker. So every time I press it, I get informed that it is not doing what I wanted, and the mail stays open :)
For sure a dirty workaround. I would fix it myself, but have not the time to get to understand the whole kdepim code.
