Description Sebastien 2004-10-24 20:42:48 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources

Hello.

KNotes notes on the desktop is a good thing.
But when the number of notes begin to be big, the desktop is cluttered by them.

It's would be good if notes could be "rolled" like other windows.
I means, clicking a title bar button will roll the note to just show the title bar.
Re-clicking the button will expand the window back.
Or it can be done by double-clicking the title bar, like KWin by default.

With this features, ever notes wouldn't be so pixels consuming: they will be very small and I could have a lot of them on the desktop, showing them one by one while hovering the mouse on them.

<i>But note that no new features are allowed for KDE 3.x anyway, only for KDE 4.</i> (Michael Brade)

Hmm, I guess inclusion in KDE proper is more of a curse than blessing. I would rather see many apps taken out of KDE main tree, because "string freeze" seems to be the most popular excuse for not doing anything. :)

I found a consistent line of requests for simplistic "minimize" or "temporarily get out of my view but dont get away completely" functionality in knotes bug reports. (see Bug 89633 , Bug 89300 as examples)

I guess the need for temporary make knote transparent / minimize / roll up / move out of way IS badly needed. The simplest way to accomplish "get out of my way" functionality is to just move the note from side to side, but, so uncool :)

It seems this "hiding" functionality is fundamental when someone is using a note in "keep above other windows" mode. Closing and, hunting for the note in system tray list couple seconds later is a bit of a hustle.

Would just adding one more (configurable?) button for "shade / unshade" to the title-bar be too much of a problem?

As for the "string freeze" excuse... Just do what Kopete and many others do: release "beta / offshot" version on kde-apps :)

I wouldn't bother with this, but I wanted to use knotes in the next series of Flash-afied KDE screen shots and moving knotes around just doesn't look cool. A "shade / unshade" would work much better.

Pretty please! :)

You are completely right, of course :-) But at the moment I simply don't have
the time :( since I am writing my diploma thesis. We had an excellent Google
Summer of Code application for KNotes but that wasn't taken. Too bad, really.
But I will implement it sooner or later.

Cheers,
  Michael

Just realized that MAY be a bit of a hustle. Adding a button, and having user backlash and all... :) Something simpler would probably be - binding middle mouse button over tittle bar (which now does the same thing left button does) to shade / unshade. This way there'll be no "ugly" cluttering of knotes UI.

Good luck with your thesis, btw.

musthave !! - i would prefer the doubleclick-method since it is already so common in other sticky-notes apss on other OSes .. Stickbrain for Mac ( which is so much to phat already IMO ) does it and also the default-suckies the are deliverd with all the apple-cats

please give us all and KDE4 .. NOW !

great kde
