Description Charles Phoenix 2004-07-21 11:53:19 UTC
Version: 1.0-beta5 "Pierre" (using KDE 3.2.3, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 20040412 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.3-r6, ssp-3.3.2-2, pie-8.7.6)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.6-win4lin-r3

This idea is akin to Evolution's Virtual Directories.

I have only been using akregator for a few days, I only have four world news sites (amoung others), article count is 200+.

That a lot of searching, even using the filter. Yes I am aware of "directory" trees.

The initial idea is to have a virtual feed called "Election", setup search parameters (multiple search strings, search headlines and/or descriptions, feeds to search). And the mouth watering idea? Searching the articles themselves. In essence the start of a news feed agent.

The computer does it's magic and I am presented with all news article to my specifications.

How? Search the given feeds and extract the matches to create a local rss file. Everything else would work the same.

yes, on my todo

I was thinking of exactly this just a few minutes ago. I realized I'm interested in reading Slashdot articles regarding HTML, and there's no reason a news aggregator couldn't show me only such articles that fit my criteria.

With a filter of some kind (such as the one suggested) this could be very simple.
Comment 3 Charles Phoenix 2004-10-15 13:25:40 UTC
All the functionality is in kmail, and presumably the code too.

This would be a logical extension of advance filter capabilities,
see kmail for practical implementation.

Another reason I am advocating cloning kmail is reduce user education and it's a very adaptive way to program and create filters. Also it would be a push towards standardizing how filtering is done in KDE. Why re-invent the wheel?

Just, so it is noted... have parent tree nodes become virtual rss feed groups. That is, if a parent tree node is specified then the filtering rule applies all its *current* children.

Yes, some possibility to create new filters or extend the list in quick filter would be nice. Some sites produce long feeds where articles are categorized but don't allow retrieve feeds for particular category. Therefore i'd like to sort them myself somehow.
Anyway is there any progress in this?

without virtual folders (aka labels) similar to those in M2 (the mail client in Opera) I don't find aKregator conducive to my needs. I have 100+ feed sources and without a way to group the feeds based on content instead of just source I am not able to identify and manage those feeds of interest. Until such capabilities are added I don't see aKregator as a viable rss reader
