Description Andreas Bayer 2004-05-02 17:17:18 UTC
Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.2.2)
Installed from:    Debian testing/unstable Packages

Asterisk is a Voip/Linux PBX. It supports many protocol types (isdn, analog phone, sip, h323, aix...). It can be used as client for all these protocols. All it need is as nice gui for kde or a gui-plugin for kopete.
I think it would be more easy to integrate voip over asterisk in kopete then to integrate kphone.

Asterisk also support for text-messages like sms.

Wondering if the Asterisk-IM plugin for Wildfire XMPP (Jabber) could do the job you ask for. Take a look here: http://www.jivesoftware.org/asterisk-im/ Or do you mean more like a complete Asterisk admin GUI?
Asterisk-IM is no common standard and only supported by Wilfire Jabber server at the moment as far as I know, but it is a really interesting and good feature for organizations that run such system.
I think it would be a really great feature for kopete and KDE if it support such a service to connect Jabber and VoIP together with many interesting things you can do with it. Does it fit into this wish or should I open a new one for it?

i would like to use asterisk for im, voip and to show which users are connected to asterisk.
so i think it fits in my wish.

I don't know if it has been considered or not but was wondering if KDE-PIM / Addressbook could provide a functionality to make calls using asterisk. It will work somewhat like when clicking a mialto:<email> link in most of the apps nowadays.
Clicking on a phone link (or it could just be a button next to a phone #) will popup a dialog box asking for linking the destination phone number (e.g. SIP/siphone?dest=1747XXXXXXX or ZAP/dev?1&dest=1800FLOWERS) with source phone device (e.g. ZAP/dev?0 or BT/nokia6630). Then it will pass the appropriate arguments to AGI script to connect/bridge the two. So the person has to just pick his clunky old telephone or shiny new nokia 6630 to answer the call. Of course this assumes KDE is able to establish a dedicated connection to an asterisk server to know it's status (possibly through Asterisk Manager Interface).
C++ wrapper for AGI - http://sourceforge.net/projects/ast-cppsock/
Asterisk manager API - http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+manager+API - the link has some examples at the end.
