Description Dik Takken 2004-04-27 20:32:27 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.2)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
OS: Linux

Often, I quickly want to set an alarm clock, but there's no way to do this very quickly in KDE. I could define a new blend of tea every time I need an alarm clock, but that's just much more complicated than necessary.

How about adding an alarm clock to the RMB menu of the klock applet. It should be really basic, allowing only to set how many minutes (no hours, seconds and so on) before a notification appears.

How could it be simpler than one left click, a dialog where you can enter minutes and seconds and a click on OK as in the tea timer?

Ah, wonderful. The 'anonymous' entry never caught my eye somehow.. Anyway, I still think that this functionality should be offered by the clock applet as well, because it's the most staight forward place to look for it. Not everybody knows all the wonders of the tea cooker, as we have learned today :)

I agree. Perhaps this could be added to the right-click context menu:

Set alarm
 - 1 minute from now
 - 5 minutes from now
 - 10 minutes from now
 - 15 minutes from now
 - 30 minutes from now
 - 60 minutes from now
 - other...

I would like to suggest actually moving the functionality of 'kalarm' in to the clock applet. Their has been some talk of reducing the number of apps in kde for simplification (admittedly only to reduce function duplication) on 'Planet KDE'. If done right, this would not necessarily the interface's complexity and would ease a 'Windows Metaphor newbie's' hunt for an alarm, I mean alarm's are always built in to a clock so wouldn't it be intuitive (in the sense that Jess Hall pointed out http://www.canllaith.org/blog/elevation.html as this is something that has already been learned in life).

Added new bug 110795 for my idea above.

Alarm timer -- good point. But of course people sometimes also have the need to set a specific time to get alarmed then (like a cron job -- but that were a bit too sophisticated).

I for myself just needed a alarm clock to be set to 10:00 o'clock, and I intuitively went to the klock applet for it. So, I support the idea to place the alarm functionality there instead of in an other applet.

But the teatime approach was a good hint. Thanks!

.
P.S.: Since the request was filed in 2004 and it is still marked NEW, I give an additional 20 points vote.

This idea is IMHO well done in StyleClock (http://fred.hexbox.de/styleclock/).
You can choose in context menu what type of alarm you want and set it:

http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=23bl.jpg
and you can also cancel alarm from menu:

This is only thing why I use StyleClock...
Alarm and timer should be in standard KDE clock :)

My 2 cents: with configurable alarm. What sound?, volume increases?, decreases? or rather not audible alarm at all but only visual /that's what I need actually/.
Comment 9 Dik Takken 2006-04-03 09:43:52 UTC
Well, if the alarm is implemented using KNotify, the user can simply configure it using the system notification config module in KControl.

Kicker is no more mantained and all bugs/wishes will not be fixed/implemented in KDE3. A list of the most interesting/unresolved issues which is still valid for KDE4 has been created. Before reopening old kicker bugs on KDE4 Plasma, please try the new KDE 4.3.1, check the current behaviour and, only if you find new bugs or if you need a particular feature, open a new bug report.

Remember that KDE 4 is a full rewrite of KDE 3 so some old features will not be re-implemented because the behaviour has be changed a lot on some sides.

Thanks for the comprehension and enjoy the new KDE 4!

Rather than posting a new bug report, could this one simply be reassigned to Plasma please?
Comment 12 FiNeX 2010-03-05 13:41:02 UTC
@Tristan: it is not the correct workflow :-) But you can add a reference to this bug if you want.

bye
