Description Rob Kaper 2004-03-03 23:56:48 UTC
Version: 1.6 (using KDE 3.2.0, compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.3 [FreeBSD] 20031106
OS: FreeBSD (i386) release 5.2-RELEASE

I'd love to see the ability to view messages inline, queing the message pane on top of the message list.

I hate previews and have grown very fond of the way Mutt allows me to browse messages in the list and explicitely view them and exit them. I currently work around this by disabling the preview and clicking on messages to get a new window, but viewing them inline is currently not possible and said behavior requires me to use the mouse while writing e-mail involves so much keyboard work that it's really a lot faster if I wouldn't have to.

Some of the changes that would go with it:

- A "Read Message" shortcut, I don't care what the default is, as long as I can set it to something simple like "Enter". Should be trivial and if desired, I'll look into this myself.

- The option to show messages inline, instead of the message list, or as others suggested, as a new tab.

- The option to exit the message with a key binding (the Ctrl-W shortcut wouldn't work in this setup) and return to the message list.

This is one of the final issues that keeps me with Mutt despite the countless other benefits KMail offers.. and I could imagine this would finally convince others like me as well: the only reason I ever switched to mutt was that it behaved like elm, after all. ;-)

Should I split the first item into a new report?

The second and third are really wishlists, but the first is pretty much a bug, because it is currently not possible to read e-mail without a mouse when previews are disabled.

I split the first change to a seperate entry as it's a bug:

Also, if merely that one were fixed, the other changes wouldn't be of much importance to me anymore.

In mutt, i just press "i" when I want to view a message, and then "i" again or "q" when I want to quit the message and go back to the list of messages. I can also use "n" or "p" to see the next or previous mail without having to return to the index. And only when I read the message this way, it is marked as read. I hate the "previews" feature of kmail, but have to use it, because it is still way better than opening a new window with return and then searching for alt-f4 to close it...

I was trying to live with kmail for the last week and though I quite like some of its features, I'll have to return to mutt untill kmail supports inline viewing of messages.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
