Description Marcin Kasperski 2004-02-24 12:33:00 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.0)
Installed from: Debian stable Packages

I repeatably have the following scenario:
- I leave my desktop running for some time (half an hour or so) without locking it
- when I return, my screen is black,
- clicking mouse, pressing space etc does nothing
- pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 (!) causes the desktop to be redisplayed
- the desktop is functional, I can move windows with the mouse, I can start new apps with the mouse etc but the keyboard is not working (any keypressess are ignored)
- usually I logged out (with mouse) - the login window displayed by kdm had keyboar operative and
- I just found that pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7 returns keyboard to the working state (and only this, Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc does nothing)

At the same time, if I lock my desktop, everything is OK.

I disabled all energy-saving related things I found in KDE Control Center, I have also not enabled DPMS within my XF86Config-4. And I DISABLED automatically running screen saver so I do not know why KDE is blanking my screen (while using Gnome on the same machine no similar problem happens)

In case it matters: I use polish locale and plastik theme.

In fact there are two separate problems:

a) my screen is blanked although I deliberately decided NOT to enable the screen saver, NOT to enable energy saving etc

b) the actual 'keyboard does nothing' state.
Comment 1 Marcin Kasperski 2004-04-06 14:23:48 UTC
The problem disappeared after I disabled all APM settings in BIOS and it seems the real bug is related somewhere betweend my hardware, my kernel and my XFree.

The KDE part of this bug is that although I deliberately disabled everything about APM I found in KDE config, KDE still enabled some energy saving features (or at least I interpret in this way the situation - using other window managers similar problem never happened).

What's the ouput if you run "xset q" in Konsole?
Are you really sure you have both screensaver disabled and monitor saving (DPMS - in Power control->Monitor control) disabled in KControl?
Comment 3 Marcin Kasperski 2004-08-11 18:04:03 UTC
I am not sure whether my current 'xset q' will matter anything, in the meantime I upgraded from debian woody to debian sarge (newer XFree, newer KDE, ....)

Nevertheless here it is:

$ xset q

i'm seeing this too - but only after i played with the screensaver config, so i assume something goes wrong with the dcop signals.

Screen Saver:
prefer blanking: yes allow exposures: yes
  timeout: 70 cycle: 600

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 1200 Suspend: 1800 Off: 2400
  DPMS is Disabled

while this sounds like the inverse, i'm pretty sure it is the same ...

Comment 7 Oswald Buddenhagen 2007-10-31 16:17:25 UTC
ok, so it is not the same, after all ...
Comment 8 Oswald Buddenhagen 2007-10-31 16:19:25 UTC
... but i think lubos fixed a).
dunno what to make of b) - prolly an x bug and fixed meanwhile.
Comment 9 Marcin Kasperski 2007-10-31 18:22:27 UTC
I haven't observed this problem for quite a lot of time. It need not prove anything as I managed to switch to another PC twice in the meantime, but, well....
