Description William Leese 2004-01-17 18:20:10 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

KDE should provide different backgrounds/background colors per virtual desktop by default.

This provides users should accidentially switch to a different virtual desktop without being familar with the feature, another visual clue that they're not on the same desktop they were before. It also demonstrates the ability to have a different background/background color per VD.

"This provides users should accidentially switch to a different virtual desktop without being familar with the feature, another visual clue that they're not on the same desktop they were before."

IMO you have a point here, but different wallpapers is not the way to go.
If I recall correctly enlightenment shows the desktop name/number whatever right in the midle of the screen for a few seconds each time you change desktop (then fades). It may be too intrusive, but something like that on one of the corners of the screen, for instance might not be a bad idea...

That works for people who are familar with the virtual desktops feature. But because it disappears in a few seconds a new user is likely to not understand what happend.

While having different backgrounds/background colors does not tell the user what's going on, it certainly tells the user "something has changed" as opposed to "something just happend" when using an onscreen message that disappears.

Why not both? It should be the default setting of KDE to have a different background for each virtual desktop so that you can see something happened then a poping window announces you "Desktop #X". As if it was the channel number you can see when you zap on your TV.

Of course the poping time is configurable and set to very long by default so that newbies understand and experts hurry to set it to short.

I think why don't has this options in desktop config at kcontrol. I don't like that only one wallpaper in all desktop.

If its confuse the new user then place it on the config somewhere on kcontrol module if not desktop then on session or whaever

When my first day of Linux i love the multi desktop and is own wallpaper. I using 4 desktop and has 4 wallpapers.

Sorry because i'm not natvie English talker

I am sure kde 3.5.x did this. Anyway i was looking for this feature request. It helps to distinguish which desktop your on if you like to categorize desktops by what you do on them...

I was surprised and disappointed that KDE4 doesn't (as far as I see) even support different backgrounds on different virtual desktops.
Having support for this as an option would be really basic and good.

I also agree with the original post here: having different backgrounds by /default/ would be a good idea if there are different virtual desktops.
They make it much more obvious where one is. What could be the problem with having this as a default? (once it's actually even supported [again]).
