Description Jonas Jonsson 2003-04-09 21:12:14 UTC
Version: 0.6.1a (using KDE 3.1.0)
Installed from: compiled sources
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.2
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20

Hi..

It would be nice that all those MSN emotions would expand to pictures like

(L) = Heart
(A) = Angel
(8) = Music

And so on... Just like normal MSN, a little annoing to not be able to understand what other people mean....

Thanks.... By the way, this is the best IM client I have found so far....

not only msn but all clients. each protocol tends to have many icons, and it's somewhat
annoying when a chat partner uses some random (...) string and expects you to know what it
means. trillian's the worst - it has a gazillian non-standard icons.

it may take a while to get all the icons sorted out, but it's something to aim at...

it would be useful if one could specify an emoticon set for each protocol
Comment 4 David Findlay 2003-09-02 07:37:01 UTC
Maybe it would be possible to let the user specify his own for each protocol.
That way when they add some more, it's easy to add them to Kopete.

I think smilies should be protocol dependent.

Olivier and I discussed whether or not this was really a duplicate.

I believe it is, because this is a request for the addition of
protocol-specific emoticons (Same as bug 56754), however the work that *this*
specific bug requires is done, so I'm resetting it to Resolved - Fixed.

However, I have a serious problem with the way this bug is currently "fixed".
It is the addition of protocol-specific emoticons, but for ONLY ONE PROTOCOL!
This protocol's style is then forced upon situations where it is not
appropriate (i.e. IRC, AIM, etc.) to make emoticons out of single characters
within parenthases.

I do like, and want, these icons, for MSN. MSN is the only place these are
appropriate - otherwise some user on Yahoo is going to choose smilies from the
dropdown, they'll be MSN/Kopete-specific, and all of his Yahoo/AIM/GAIM/ICQ/
Jabber/other buddies will see '(6)(L)(M)...' and wonder 'wtf?'.

I really think that Kopete needs per-protocol emoticons before this is part of
a release, so that it doesn't interfere with other protocols. Let's *not* pull
a Trillian here, please?
