Apparently, the setting does get saved as can be seen in kwinrc above (and, once I set the virtual keyboard to None in the settings, I can see maliit-keyboard process getting out of the process list, too). So it's just a matter of System Settings being set to the incorrect default when the virtual keyboard is disabled.

Maliit got removed completely for me as of a recent f43 update - does this make the bug no longer relevant?

There may still be users of other distros that haven't removed Maliit who might still be affected. 

Alexey, which distro are you using, and are you still able to reproduce this?

I’m on F43 these days, and indeed Maliit is non more on my machine, replaced with Plasma Keyboard, _and_ No keyboard now persists as it should. Can’t say anything about other distros but I believe it’s not so much Maliit as it was the settings code that wasn’t persisting the change correctly, and so having Plasma 6.6 fixes the issue? (Haven’t looked at the actual code.)

Can confirm the same bug, but I don't think it's specific to maliit. I have fedora kde and when selecting no virtual keyboard it always switched back to plasma keyboard. Now maliit was an option, so I removed it just incase. But that didn't change anything. Something to note is that if I switch to ibus wayland it will persist.

Please share your system information, you can get this from command line with kinfo
At this point, it's confirmed that the but with the setting persisting was not limited to Maliit
We need to confirm the bug is still happening with Plasma 6.6.4. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm on 6.6.3 so I guess that's not helpful. I think I have to wait till the 14th for the new Fedora release

When you select "none" it practically works (the keyboard doesn't pop up when it normally would) but the plasma keyboard will be highlighted when reopening the settings. So it looks like it's reverting back to plasma keyboard but practically it's staying disabled.

I'm not seeing that behavior on Plasma 6.6.4 or built from git-master. Can you reproduce it with a new user that has all default settings?

I can reproduce on my device with a newly-created user. In my case, for some reason, not only is the visual setting reset back to Plasma Keyboard, but it actually does become active again at some later point (possibly after offline updates?). I end up noticing this because of a Plasma Keyboard bug that affects input on physical keyboards.

In my kwinrc, it looks like VirtualKeyboardEnabled=true has been set, although setting it to None was the last action I took in System Settings > Keyboard > Virtual Keyboard.

As people already stated this only affects what the KCM shows, the actual setting is applied correctly.

This happens specifically on Fedora because it ships a system-wide default value in /usr/share/kde-settings/kde-profile/default/xdg/kwinrc

Setting the keyboard to "None" (correctly) writes InputMethod[$d] to kwinrc, but because of a bug in KConfigSkeleton the UI doesn't reflect that correctly

KConfigSkeleton: Fix reading value for deleted entry with system default

We have two kinds of default values to consider:

- system-wide config files, i.e. /etc/xdg etc
- the built-in default value, i.e. from the kcfg file, if no entries are present for that key

When setting useDefaults(true) we want to consider both. The combined value is stored in mDefaultValue.

Entries can be marked as deleted. In that case system-wide entries are also ignored.
The built-in default should *not* be ignored though. That is to be consistent with KConfigGroup::readEntry()

In readConfig, we pass mDefaultValue to readEntry(). That will override deleted values with the mDefaultValue if
a system-wide default was set. We don't want that. We only want the built-in default value as fallback.

That means we need to keep track of the original default value. Unfortunately we can't add another member to KConfigSkeletonGenericItem
(would break ABI), so add it to KConfigSkeletonItem's d-pointer as QVariant.
