Description Junakreiter 2025-05-11 10:00:57 UTC
SUMMARY:
When moving the mouse over desktop items the item does not always get focus.
If there is no focus is cant be opened via double click.
I have to move the mouse away and back on the item to be in focus with the item.
It is an erratic behaviour. I can not see a certain pattern.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Move the mouse over certain desktop items several times. and see if the focus follows exactly.

OBSERVED RESULT
When moving the mouse 10 times over the same 4 items, at least one is not always getting focus 6 times.
Moving up or down makes a difference.

EXPECTED RESULT
focus every time.

My Setup is a dual Monitor setup with a 4K main Monitor on 100% and an active color profile.

Does this happen on X11, on Wayland, or both?

Are you using any non-default alignment or arrangement settings for your desktop icons?

Can you attach a screen recording that shows the issue happening?
Comment 3 Junakreiter 2025-05-14 05:45:52 UTC
Hello Nate,
Happens on Wayland.
I tried X11 a minute ago, where nothing gets in focus. Crashes completely.
Icons are on their default position in a row.
Video added.

Were you able to test on X11? I can't quite tell.

What graphics hardware do you have?
Comment 6 Junakreiter 2025-05-15 05:37:38 UTC
Hi Nate as i wrote in X11 the desktop crashes completely.
Cant test there anything.

Comment 7 Junakreiter 2025-05-15 05:39:14 UTC
I found out that a faster mouse movement causes better focus
Comment 8 Junakreiter 2025-05-15 05:41:50 UTC
In other words extremely slow mouse movement gives me consistently NO focus on icons,
Comment 9 Junakreiter 2025-05-15 06:15:29 UTC
Looks like the problem only regards the UP movement of the mouse.
Comment 10 Junakreiter 2025-05-16 09:34:48 UTC
Some additional observations:

- It only happens when the link text is multi-line.
- Happens with all symbol sizes.
- All other options under [desktop right-click context menu -> 'Symbols'] don't seem to have an effect.
- The links themself don't seem to be involved, since it is reproducible with all that have multi-line text underneath them.

I attached another screen-recording that shows the difference between multi-line and single-line text.

I was able to test it on X11 and the problem exists there as well. Had some crashes on the X11 session when I tried last time.
Although it seems like it is a bit easier to reproduce on wayland. I have to move onto the icon a bit slower for it to fail to focus the icon.

I can't reproduce on my Fedora KDE 42 device - but for what it's worth, this appears to be a practically identical recurrence of https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492447
Comment 14 Nate Graham 2025-05-19 21:37:55 UTC
Great find, John. It looks like this is the same issue with larger-than-normal text. Perhaps that was never fully fixed. I'll re-open it and investigate.
