Indeed, I can reproduce the issue. My confusion came from the fact that this is *supposed to be* fixed, and it looks like that fix regressed. The settings window has a "Keep Launchers Separate" checkbox that appears to do nothing, and is also checked by default when the new intention in Plasma 6 is to have it unchecked by default.

I'll mark this as a duplicate of the bug report tracking that issue, and then re-open it (as soon as I find it...).
Comment 6 Nate Graham 2024-01-30 18:07:50 UTC
Aha, the checkbox does work, but only when you apply the setting by clicking the OK button on the settings window, not the Apply button. Only that checkbox seems to be affected. That's probably another bug; will follow up on it separately.

In fact I was wrong, and when you're experiencing was an intentional change for the non-icons-only Task Manager for Plasma 6.0. If you don't like it, you can use the "Keep Launchers Separate" setting that I mentioned earlier.
Comment 10 Eugene Savitsky 2024-02-06 19:34:11 UTC
What is the point of having it separate by default why one want that behavior? And with a very hidden and not clear checkbox?

I am sure it should be defaulted to "not separate".

I agree with ezh, last time I saw the behaviour of using "keep launchers separate" was with those small icons you could pin in windows xp

It was to reduce the need for people with Task Managers on their panels to create app launchers outside of the "Pinned apps" feature, which was a part of fixing Bug 390817 which has been a source of user frustration for years.

If you don't like this change, you're welcome to undo it by using the previously-mentioned setting.
Comment 13 John Veness 2024-03-17 11:27:31 UTC
I have the same problem, and it doesn't seem to be possible to (consistently) revert to the previous behaviour.
Comment 14 Sjoerd 2024-03-17 12:19:16 UTC
I also still have problem with this setting, using Tumbleweed with Plasma 6.0.2.

When you enable "keep launchers seperate", the launcher icons are all to the left of the taskmanager. But when you open one of these programs, the launcher icon does not disappear as it used to in Plasma 5. So even though I have almost all programs I have pinned opened, I also still have 10 icons to the left of my task manager for all these programs.

When you disable "keep launchers seperate", the launcher icons are mixed with open programs (so not all to the left), but they do disappear when you open them. But now my icon to open Konsole is suddenly in the middle of my task manager between an open Firefox window and Thunderbird.

There used to be a way, to keep the launchers seperate, to the left of the taskmanager, and still have them disappear when you clicked them to open the program. Was this intentional or is this a bug? It seems to me that when I enable the launcher seperate option, they should disappear when you open the program.
Comment 15 Nate Graham 2024-03-18 18:48:26 UTC
It sounds like the "keep launchers separate" setting has become incoherent, and should be used to let people get back to the previous behavior (which they want) rather than the current behavior (which doesn't make a lot of sense).

Nonetheless, this bug report has to be closed as RESOLVED INTENTIONAL, since it was intentional. Please open a new bug report to request that "keep launchers separate" do something more sensible. Thanks.

Please post here the new bug number. Also, please add a picture to new bug.

Opened a new bug for this: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483942

And thanks for all the work on Plasma 6 by the way. And for giving simple bug reports like this attention as well.
