SUMMARY Plasma feels noticeably slow on a laptop with 6th gen i5. Tried with X11, and it feels more responsive, albeit still slow STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Login to Wayland session 2. Use it 3. OBSERVED RESULT On a Wayland session, the session feels slow and not as responsive. Tested with X11 and while it also feels slow, it feels more responsive. EXPECTED RESULT The session should feel smooth and responsive. I'm not expecting much but enough that just simply using the terminal or web browser won't be as laggy. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: KDE neon Unstable Edition KDE Plasma Version: 5.90.0 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.246.0 Qt Version: 6.6.0 Kernel Version: 6.2.0-37-generic (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 520 Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Product Name: Inspiron 5559 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION I am definitely not expecting something as smooth as a high end gaming desktop, but just enough that this laptop doesn't feel like a low-end potato
Can you quantify the ways in which it feels slow and laggy? *What* feels slow and laggy? And please don't say "everything." :) We need more detail if we're to investigate this issue, since obviously it isn't affecting everyone using an Intel system (myself included) or else it would have been noticed and fixed long ago. Also, does the issue reproduce in a new clean user account?
Hi Nate, I believe the problem is on the hardware itself. This laptop is recently acquired from a friend and the fan, I just realized, wasn't spinning. I'll keep you posted for when I get a replacement for it
Cool, thanks for the follow-up.

Hi Nate, just wanna follow up. While the fan issue fixed the slowness, I still find it constantly locking up in the middle of its session. And the laptop lid issue that I opened up isn't resolved yet. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=475632#c18 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=478325

That should help developers like Nate narrow down whether it's an issue with the hardware or a regression from Plasma 6.
Also, this "locking up" issue might be related to this one: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474725 Though I'm not sure if it's the same problem or not.

I can install on a separate partition

Created attachment 164472 [details] Fps is around 30 Today I installed both Fedora rawhide & Neon Unstable. Both felt very choppy. Animations felt laggy and youtube videos were dropping frames. When I enable show fps effect, it shows I am running around 30 fps instead of 60. I observe the same thing on Fedora & Neon. I am also running an Intel APU, 9th gen i5(9500) to be precise. Plasma 5 runs fine on it.

Maybe try KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 and see if it helps.
(In reply to Peter Eszlari from comment #14) > Maybe try KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 and see if it helps. based on the ticket you linked, shouldn't it be automatic?
(In reply to Peter Eszlari from comment #14) > Maybe try KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 and see if it helps. Tried it and it somewhat does help, thank you. But the performance is still not smooth. Although the fps jumps up to 60 it drops to low 40 when dragging windows, opening overview and such.

KWIN_DRM_DISABLE_BUFFER_READABILITY_CHECKS and KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS are different things: https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/wikis/Environment-Variables#kwin_drm_no_ams

That should help developers like Nate narrow > down whether it's an issue with the hardware or a regression from Plasma 6. For what its worth, hasn't locked up in X11. (In reply to Peter Eszlari from comment #14) > Maybe try KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 and see if it helps. It appears to be running a consistent 60FPS, and appears to be performing much better with this on. I haven't noticed it locking up yet, and I will try applying a bit more pressure to this.
The micro-freezes on Intel should have been fixed as of Plasma 6 RC1. Try unsetting KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1 when using RC1 and see if the issue is gone. If not, we'll track this issue as a problem with AMS enabled on some Intel hardware.

Today I tried again on Fedora rawhide RC 1 (completely up to date | without setting up KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1) the issue still exist.
I am having the 30fps issue.

@techxgames@outlook.com, are you able to test with the above commits to see if they alleviate or even completely fix the issue? That would be grand. :)
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #36) > @techxgames@outlook.com, are you able to test with the above commits to see > if they alleviate or even completely fix the issue? That would be grand. :) I just booted it back up, and one thing's for sure, the desktop is now loading with the lid closed, albeit a little slow. I will test it out in the next few days and see if it'll be stable and won't require me to reboot.
The 30fps bug is still present in Fedora Rawhide RC 2. My Apu is i5-9500 (Intel UHD 630).
The 30fps issue should be fixed with https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/5344
