Description Peter Humphrey 2023-07-05 13:06:11 UTC
SUMMARY

I have Restore sessions from last logout set. I log out and in and I have a blank session. Moreover, the applications in the previous sessions also lose their own settings.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Arrange applications over several desktops.
2. Set "On last logout" in Session Restore in System Settings
3. Log out and in.

OBSERVED RESULT

An empty session.

EXPECTED RESULT

All applications and their individual settings should be restored to the way they were.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows:
macOS:
Linux/KDE Plasma:
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.107.0
Qt Version: 5.15.10

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
New Gentoo ~amd64 system built from scratch, using Stage 3 tarball.
New user created and used to run a new desktop session with Firefox, 3 x
Konsole, KMail, Dolphin on separate desktops. All lost on logout or system restart.

One more thing: one desktop has 3 x gkrellm2 panels; those do get preserved over logins.

Are you using Wayland or X11?

Which specific apps are failing to restore their settings?

X11.

Konsole, Dolphin, Korganizer all fail to appear. Firefox does appear, but on the current desktop and after a long delay. I'm having trouble remembering the loss of settings - I'd have to build a new system to check - but I assume it will have been some or all of those three.

Thanks. And are any apps listed in the "Ignored Applications" text field of the Desktop Session page in System Settings?

I have now built a new Gentoo ~amd64 system, and I'm running it now.

Yes. I have boinc,boincmgr,kmail set.

KMail loses some display options: folder list width and columns, message list height. This is a nuisance.
Firefox no longer waits so long to appear, but it's still not on its previous desktop (I have six of those set up). Also, there's no longer a way to send the Firefox window to another desktop; this may be a separate issue though.
I can live with Konsole not being restored, if I have to.

Thanks.

It occurs to me that, if KMail is marked as not to be started on login, the problem with its lost config must be happening during its stopping on logout. Just in case it helps. :)

A couple of other things, which may be related or not - I haven't the knowledge of KDE to decide.

1. I have KMail archives in a certain directory, and I wanted to extract the files from the latest one to inspect them. I clicked on the .tar.bz2 file in Dolphin, which opened it in Ark. The expected files appeared in the Ark dialogue. I then hit Extract, twice, expecting the files to be extracted into a new directory named the same as the archive but without the .tar.bz2 suffix. The directory was created, but it was empty. I tried this on several KMail archives, with the same result. This did work right in earlier versions.

2. I have Krfb set up with the necessary password to allow remote logins. So I was in the local pub and opened the Android RFB app to assess the progress of a big job, and it did indeed show my desktop. Once. No updating happened, and the picture was the same even after rebooting the tablet. This also did work right in earlier versions.

3. One desktop has KOrganiser on display, to which I want to add my Google Groupware calendar. I followed the usual procedure to set up the calendar and authenticate it in Firefox, but the new calendar did not appear. Once again, this did work right in earlier versions.

I hope these aren't just confusing the issue. Good luck!

I see this bug has been associated with the plasma shell, but I think it may really be an SDDM problem. I found that someone's similar problem had been fixed, or evaded, by adding SDDM to the video group. I tried that and it did work on an Intel i3 box but it didn't on a Ryzen M9 box.
