Description Claudio 2023-02-11 13:31:04 UTC
SUMMARY
In https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/merge_requests/1149 the possibility to select what should happen by default if i right-click on the desktop and select "Leave" or press the default shortcut "Ctrl+Atl+Del" has been removed.

Changing the config option "shutdownType=" between 0/1/2 in ksmserverrc still has the desired effect of preselecting the wanted default option in the leave dialog.

For me that's the default way of shutting down (find it somehow faster then through kickoff - maybe because in kickoff i have to select the right button for shutdown ;) ) and in contrast to the reason for removing it, there is obviously another place where this setting is used - so could this merge be reverted?

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Open "Desktop Session" in System settings.

OBSERVED RESULT
Options for default behavior of logout screen are gone.

EXPECTED RESULT
Options are still available as they still have their use.

You can customise that context menu on the desktop to have a direct shutdown menu instead

Context menu settings

Where can I find the possibility to get a shutdown entry in the context menu?
As in my attached screenshot there is only "Lock screen" or "Leave..." which is by default configured to "Log Out" instead of "Shut Down".

Indeed, there is no "shut down" menu item available in the desktop context menu.

Nonetheless, this was an intentional change as it was considered a super nerdy esoteric feature that confused users.

What confuses me is the process that I need to follow now, since now I need to set up a widget that I don't click, assign the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Del to that widget, remove the global shortcut in the settings, configure the widget, and place it somewhere where I don't accidentally click it.

Was considered super nerdy and esoteric? I am trying to communicate friendly here. Why does KDE have to follow Gnome on the path to a worse power user experience. This change wastes 2 seconds of my life every time i want to shut down. Instead of firing of the Ctrl+Alt+Del
There might be many other users affected as well.

Please consider reverting this.

Was considered super nerdy and esoteric? I am trying to communicate friendly here. Why does KDE have to follow Gnome on the path to a worse power user experience. Instead of firing of the Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Enter, i now have to activate my brain and hit one more key or use the mouse. This change wastes more than 2 seconds on each shut down. With all other users affected, those seconds add up.

Please consider reverting this change.

In Plasma 6, you will be able to set a global shortcut for "shut down but show the login screen" or even "shutdown but don't show the login screen" (and same for reboot and log out) so you can set such a shortcut and not have to activate your brain again.

Thanks for your work and your answer. That upcoming functionality sadly won't do. Having one combo and switching if a reboot is needed trumps two shortcuts IMHO.

I love KDE for the customizability and options, felt respected as a power user. GNOME wen't down the path of removing options to make it easier for new users (who don't stay newbies forever). Now it can be made "usable" with inofficial plugins that break on upgrades.
