Description Samuele 2023-01-28 10:48:17 UTC
SUMMARY
In the "Sessions" page of system settings I enabled the option to restore the last saved session.
Now the problem is that the only way to save a session is through the button in the application, which I don't use in favor of simply looking for the app I need on Krunner.

With Krunner we can shut down the system but not manage the sessions, nor we can do it pressing the shutdown button to show the exit options.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Enable "Restore last manually saved session" in System Setting > Desktop session
2. Remove the application menu widget from any panel or desktop
3. Look for a way to save the session

OBSERVED RESULT
There's no other way to save a session.

EXPECTED RESULT
An item "Save session" should show up in Krunner or in the exit options to manually save the session.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.102.0
Qt Version: 5.15.8

After you reboot, the option should appear in KRunner as well as Kickoff. Can you reboot and see if they appear?

The option is currently enabled and in the following places I can't see anything but the "Session settings" link to the setting:
- Krunner with keywords "save", "session" and the same words but in my language (italian)
- Overview with the same keywords

I don't use Kickoff; to shut down or restart etc. the pc I press the power button and choose an option there. This view also lacks the possibility to save a session.

So this is effectively intentional, then. Since you don't use Kickoff, Kicker, or Dashboard, you're missing the place where we expect the UI to be prominently exposed, so you'll have to use one of the KRunner-powered searches.

I guess we could also put it in the Logout screen, which after all already has other non-session-ending actions (sleep, hibernate).

On SDDM you have at the bottom a "toolbar" where you can switch between keyboard layouts or x11/wayland.

This layout can be used for session save where you can define a name and at the next login (SDDM) you can choose one of the saved session.

So now the problem is that I don't find any way to save a session with Krunner (or Krunner embed in things like Overview).

Doesn't SSDM only pertain the login screen? If it does, how would you save a session which you haven't opened yet?
Comment 6 Nate Graham 2023-02-13 17:37:50 UTC
SDDM is not related here.
