Description worthington_j 2022-12-22 15:30:55 UTC
SUMMARY
***
I would like to request a new feature. I would like to see the ability to create groups for tags. I have around 200 tags in my collection, but I use about 25 of them on a regular basis. On the right side menu Captions > Tags shows either the tags in the selected picture or all the tags from the entire database. I would like to see a 3rd option where you can select a group that you create that display the tags of your choice. This would allow users the ability to quickly select that tags they use most often without the need to typing or scrolling.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Right side menu Captions
2. Tag Column
3. Ability to show Groups of tags

There is a tool button under the tags tree on the right sidebar to hide unused tags of the currently selected images. There is also the option to select recently used tags in the context menu above the thumbnail.

Thanks for providing those options. I still think the ability to have a custom list would be quicker and easier. If you hide the unused tags then you are forced to start typing to ad more. The recently used list requires a right click, arrow down, and expanding of a menu to select each new tag. The ability to have a custom list would save a lot of time by selecting my picture and clicking on each tag in a small custom list.

In my scenario I use tags for people. In my entire collection I've tagged hundreds of people so I have a lot of tags. Most days I only need the tags of immediate family members which requires scrolling or manually start typing each name and selecting. For now my work around is to run two separate configs/collections of digikam. One config points to a collection that contains a single image that I've added my most used tags. I add all my new pictures to this config/collection and tag them. Once that is done I move the pictures to the location of the other config/collection that contains my entire library of photos.

If you feel this feature would not benefit others I understand plus I have a decent work around. I used another program in the past that allowed the option of a custom list and it was very useful to me, but I love the look, layout, and speed of digikam so it is my editor of choice.

I have another issue, which might be "fixed" with the proposed "tag groups": I use tags for people and I am have been tagging photos with digikam for a long time by now. In the meantime some of those persons have died (or moved away). So I won't need these tags while tagging new photos. But, of course, I want to keep these tags on the old photos.
Having the ability to focus on tags with "people alive", while tagging new photos, will speed up this process.

One thought about the implementation: I think, it would be handy, to have the ability to assign one tag (e.g. "John Doe") to more than one group (e.g. "People living in Springfield", "People alive", "My bowling group", ...). So I can pick the best fitting group of tags, when tagging the 200 pictures of our "bowling group event last Saturday".
