Description Nick Stefanov 2022-11-13 12:43:31 UTC
SUMMARY
When one turn on the monitor while the OS is working in background, plasma tries to resize the resolution and we get a black screen for several seconds:
https://i.imgur.com/4j2MHaA.png
Only 1/6 of the Kicker icon is visible and something on the upper left corner. This problem leads to uther bugs like:
Dolphin crashes on monitor turn on: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460478
And GOG Wine installer windows moves to top-left corner when monitor turns off and back on: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=461244

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Turn on the monitor while the OS is working.
2.
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
Plasma tries to resize at monitor turn on

EXPECTED RESULT
It should not matter if the monitor is turned on or off hence it shoud not try to resize the resolution.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.99.0
Qt Version: 5.15.7

So were no monitors turned on? Or is this a second screen that you're turning on?

Can you take a video (not a screen recording; like a shakycam phone video) that shows what happens?
Comment 2 Nick Stefanov 2022-11-14 23:03:15 UTC
It happens rarely so I will not be able to record it. Yes, I'm with a single monitor setup. Imagine you have some work to do, for example to archive a large file. You start to compress it, just turn off the monitor and get away from the PC for a while. When you turn back and turn on monitor, that's what happens (see the screenshot).

I see it. I'm trying to figure out of there's actually been a resolution change (which would be a KScreen bug) or if Plasma is messing up somehow (which would be a Plasma bug).

I really don't know...

Any chance you can upgrade to Plasma 5.27.5 to see if this is still an issue? There were a lot of desktop sizing/location and multimonitor fixes in that release. Thanks!
