Description ConteZero 2022-05-08 07:51:37 UTC
After
https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin/commit/d3839617193e92463806580699caa595c892b8a6
it is too easy to open a file unintentionally by clicking somewhere to the right of the file name.

With "single click" mode enabled all the datails row become clickable, I think that only the filename should be clickable, the remaining space on the right should only select the row when you click on it.

That's the way it was in Dolphin 21.12 and earlier. But we had many many complaints about this, so we changed it so that the entire row is a click area.

When you say:

> it is too easy to open a file unintentionally by clicking somewhere to the right of the file name.
Why are you clicking there? What are you expecting to happen instead?

(Likely a dupe of Bug 452273)

I do not expect it to open a file if I click on the file details columns (date, size, etc...).
It could happen to click unintentionally here, as example while you try to select multiple files with mouse.

I think that with "single click" mode enabled it should behave in the following way:
- if you click on the red rectangle (see attached image) the file will open
- if you click in the area to the right of the red rectangle the file will only be selected

That's the way it was before. But per Bug 181437, a lot of people didn't like it, and it was inconsistent with other list views. The fact that hovering over a row highlights the whole row now should make it pretty obvious that something will happen when you click.

You can still drag-select by clicking and dragging up or down, so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you're looking for a place to click to deselect items, we deliberately added some space to the left and right of the list that you can use. You can also hit the Escape key to deselect everything.

I think this is one of those "try it and see if you can get used to it, and I bet you'll actually like it" things.

Bug 181437 was reported in 2009, I do not remember what was my default file manager at that time, probably not Dolphin.

Yes, I expect that the row is selected, not the file opened.

I've seen the space on the left and I think that it's not very intuitive, to be usable you need to enlarge the empty zone but then you waste a lot of space on the screen.

Well, definitely not.
This is one of those "I tried to get used to it but I hate it more and more with each passing day, the time has come to look for a new file manager" things.

An example of "good" user interface for a file list is here:
https://invent.kde.org/system/dolphin

The rows are highlighted when you move the mouse, but the file/folder is only opened when you click on the "Name" column.

Ok, sorry Dolphin didn't work out for you.
