A video showing the panel resizing on its own and the fact that it is unclickable

It's my first big bug and it's really weird. basically when I open Plasma desktop the panel keeps getting bigger and smaller all the time, it is not clickable, and my wallpaper gets colored in a weird way, like if it getting modified with a retro filter. My system feels also a bit unresponsive, e.g. pressing Alt+space for Krunner makes you wonder if it working at all, it takes a huge amount of time to open. After sometimes, and only some of the times, the panel disappears and everything feels back to normal, but with no panel.

valgrind log, it's compressed in tar.gz

I am running the debugging steps here https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Debugging.
There could be a memory leak as if I start plasma and just open (with Ctrl+Esc) the process manager I see that plasmashell starts at 83K and after five minutes not doing anything it doubles and it keeps increasing.
The same thing happens to kwin_wayland.
While running it with valgrind it starts at about 800k and after 10/15 minutes it is 1110k.
The memory consumption increase is not monotonic though, it sometimes lowers for a moment but the general trend is to increase.

I stopped valgrind after sometimes, the panel "appeared" after the following messages on konsole:
[...]
Plasma Shell startup completed
qt.qpa.wayland: Wayland does not support QWindow::requestActivate()
qml: PlasmaExtras.ScrollArea is deprecated. Use PlasmaComponents3.ScrollView instead.

I also run gbd plasmawindowed:

To enable execution of this file add
	add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.30-gdb.py

That is *exceptionally* strange.

Can you get a screenshot of this? Is it washed out? If so that would suggest that Plasma is frozen.

More weird movements of the panel, and the coloring of the wallpaper

I couldn't take a screenshot because if I open a window the wallpaper returns normally colored.
Here's a video showing the other weird movement of the panel and the fact that everytime I close all windows the wallpaper gets weirdly colored, as you can see in the video the color transitions from normal to strange and I can see that transition everytime I close the last opened window.
After sometimes the panel freezes and if I try to hoover the cursor on it it disappears till next Plasma restart.

I'm unironically getting goose bumps just by reading this bug report, lol.

Which applets do you have on the panel? Could you please share with us your Plasma config? It's something inside ~/.config named as "plasma", "applet" or "desktop" and probably with "rc" suffix. Inspect them via text editor, and you'll find the one that contains applets configuration.

Also, which distro is that?

Can you give me another hint on what to search for in config files?

I'm on Arch Linux

I have just realized a video showing all the bugs together from plasma start till the panel disappears and then the wallpaper gets totally black. It slightly less than 2 minutes, how can I upload it?

plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

Could it be this one?

I'm usually doing YouTube upload + link-only access (so that it does not appear in search results, and thus won't hurt Plasma brand — especially after the problem is fixed).

> Could it be this one?

Yep, thanks. I'll try to apply it on second user account later, when I get back from job.

Here I posted the video I was talking about on a PeerTube instance. I picked a random instance from the list that had signup enabled, I am not affiliated with it or any content on it.

In the video the command I use to start plasma is yinit, an alias for 'XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland dbus-run-session fusuma & startplasma-wayland'.
Fusuma is a program I use to enable gestures such as three finger swipes.
Also I open / close konsole and obs (a random program) with keyboard shortcuts.

This is clearly related to having two expanding spacers in a panel.

I was not able to reproduce this in master, however I did reproduce that expanding spacers in general are quite fuzzy with panel sizes. My existing refactoring at https://invent.kde.org/plasma/plasma-desktop/-/merge_requests/854 addresses this, and fixes the fuzziness here.

With some luck, that MR also fixes this bug; but that's just a guess, as I'm unable to reproduce this anyway.

I can confirm it is related to the spacers, I started plasma on Xorg and removed them and now the bug is gone in Wayland.

As soon as I finish the MR with the mask bugfix I'll finish up that MR as well
Comment 17 Nate Graham 2023-05-17 02:42:42 UTC
That MR was merged and we haven't gotten any more reports of the issue since then; looks like it's fixed now.
